Talk about The Minor Prophets (2 Volume Set)

I haven't read but a few of the Minor Prophets chapters, (Habakkuk and Nahum). I'm using this book as my guide in teaching the Minor Prophets to our home bible study group. Lot's of detail to help understand the history surrounding each prophet while capturing God's design for his people in each book. These books speak to our current times we are faced with daily and it seems as if we are living the days of the Prophets here and now. Therefore, we must pay close attention to these words of warning and hope. These books make it clear why we have hope in times of calamity.

I was hoping this work would be more along the lines of a critical commentary;however it is not. The work is more of a pleasurable devotional commentary than anything else. Boice has wonderful insights and the work initiates reflection; nonetheless, it was not what I was hoping for.

In preparation for my sermon series on Malachi, I quickly picked up this book in hopes for some solid and engaging pastoral insight. I have a great deal of respect for the theological and pastoral chops of Boice, which is why this book fell a little flat for me.

There were too many passages in Malachi where Boice compressed several sections of the Prophet into one rather short chapter. In doing so, there were times when he simply did not deal with some of the more provocative passages in Malachi. By the end of my study for the book, I found myself just skimming over his chapters to make sure I wasn't missing anything (and some gems were found), but overall, it just didn't deliver as I expected.

If you are working on any of these minor prophets, I would recommend the NICOT or NIV Application Series to you first.

Good review of Minor Prophets with applicability to today's Christian life. I expected more detailed discussions of the texts themselves. The chapters were more sermon than exegesis.

A good commentary, but not as extensive as I wanted.

I stumbled across this commentary when I was looking for a resource to help me teach the Minor Prophets. It is without doubt the best commentary I have purchased in years. Boice not only does a wonderful job of explaining scripture, he also includes stories that will be a delight to use when teaching and which illustrate the practical application of the scriptures. In fact this commentary is so good that I googled his name to find others by this author. I highly recommend this two volume set.
Non-biblical conclusions are too conservative for me.
