This is the complete 14 volume set of sermons on Romans by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. All over the world in the most diverse situations are to be found Christian men and women who owe an incalculable debt to the ministry of Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones who for thirty years was the minister of Westminster Chapel, London. His longest series of expositions was this 14 volume set of Romans, the greatest of New Testament Epistles.Just as Lloyd-Jones' public ministry stood out as widely different from contemporary preaching, so his Romans came into bookshops with an appeal that took many by surprise. Not a few thought that the nature of his pulpit ministry would inhibit its continuance on paper 'He needed to be heard, not read.' But those of that opinion were mistaking where his real strength lay. First of all, it lay in the truth he was speaking, not in its delivery. Further, his whole view of preaching meant that he addressed himself to the heart and conscience, as well as to the mind, and sermonic material of that kind has never failed to hold readers as well as hearers. Time was to prove that his message would reach far larger numbers by his books than had ever been possible even in his widespread ministry. The books would also go into any languages and his Romans would be read by thousands, in nations from Brazil to Korea.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Romans - An Exposition of Chapter 1: The Gospel of God. Carlisle: Banner of Truth, 1985. 394 pp. $28.00

This year, I set out to read all fourteen volumes of the Lloyd-Jones series on Romans. The first volume, Romans - An Exposition of Chapter 1: The Gospel of God is a theological feast for the soul. These messages are a part of a fourteen-year journey that Lloyd-Jones led his congregation through before his death in 1981.

The first volume guides readers through Romans 1:1 - 1:24, nearly four hundred pages - which should be a good sign for anyone who values solid exposition.

Anyone who knows Lloyd-Jones knows that his preaching was packed with gospel-centered, Christ-saturated teaching. This volume is no exception. A few citations should be enough to attract the attention of hungry followers of Christ:

"The business of the gospel is to make us righteous in the sight of God, to make us acceptable with a God, to enable us to stand in the presence of God."

“The business of the gospel is to bring people to God, and to reconcile them to God. Not to fill churches! Not to have good statistics! But to reconcile men to God - to save them from the wrath to come."

“If you do not see the wrath of God when you look at the cross of Calvary’s Hill, it is very certain that you do not see the love of God either."

“We must desire His glory and, therefore, we must desire to live for His glory. We must seek His will; we must desire to know His will. And our greatest endeavor always should be to do His will in all things and in all respects, whatever the consequences may be. That is godliness."

I stand with many others who consider Lloyd-Jones the finest expositor of the 20th century. May God raise a new generation of pastors and leaders who follow the lead of this zealous Welshman.

Even though I have been studying the bible for about 25 years, I found this to review topics and doctrines I've known well in a new light. NOTE: all of these audio sermons are available free online. I would listen in the car, then read these at home.

Martyn Lloyd Jones dares to take on the Presbyterian scholar, Charles Hodge. He applies the same probing analysis to the scriptures that he used as a medical doctor. His exposition is gripping and engages the reader. He calls forth his intellectual faculties like tactical forces and systematically conquers the interpretation of Romans chapter 7 and 8:1 with precision accuracy. His logic is exact and leaves no loop holes for wandering questions after reading this volume. I highly recommend this work for any thinking person.
