I read Dr. Russell's book "What the Bible Says About Healthy Living" over 6 years ago and have thought for a long time it would be great to have a cookbook that goes with it. And now here it is. I love it.

Rex Daniel Russell (January 14, 1941-January 29, 2009) was a physician from Fort Smith, Arkansas, who authored the 1996 book, What the Bible Says About Healthy Living. Russell was also the first Arkansas doctor to perform angioplasties and stent placements for cardiovascular patients. An Oklahoma native, Russell was diagnosed with diabetes in his teens but nevertheless managed to compete in athletics.

There seems to a number of like books on the market and all saying they know what the bible says about healthy eating and living. This book does not sell supplements or make claims of curing cancer and the like. As I long time Christian, I feel it is a fair even handed presentation of biblical living and diet from a medical doctor. Not a lot of whizzbang or wild claims. Just good solid reading. Give it a try. I am glad I bought it!

I love this book. It is very informative and enjoyable to read. I especially like that Dr. Russell advocates fasting something which most books do not advocate, but Dr. Russell makes a lot of sense that you should fast. I tried his suggestions and I feel 100% better. I am very happy with this book and I learned a lot on how to take better care of myself...after all, like Dr. Russell says, our body is our temple.

This is an awesome book that teaches about food groups. For example, what does the Bible say about meat, salt, sugars, dairy? What did God tell Israel to eat so that they would have "none of these diseases?" What did the Bible say that Jesus ate? What does the Bible say about what God chose to feed people when he fed them miraculously? The Bible is good science. It just so happens that most serious modern health programs (not fads) end up saying almost the same things.

I have 45 years of nutrition study. I found this to be one of two best nutrition books of all time. (The other being Let's Eat Right to Keep Fit, by Davis). I only found two things wrong in the book, which is an excellent report coming from critical me. The author said to limit beef and to limit salt, though he had just got finished whole chapters explaining that the Bible speaks well of each of those. I say that the author's premise was "what the Bible says", and the Bible does not say to limit them. So, he should not have said in this book to limit salt or beef.

Read this book to learn interesting facts, like beef muscle meats are 98% clean of toxins, beef fat as in that layer of fat around a New York strip steak is 50% toxic, pork muscle and it's fat are 50% toxic. Learn what is a good oil, why you need salt, which sugars are best, and more.

The author has good humor, no condemnation for disagreeing with him, and makes a good point about food not being the basis of salvation.

The research upholds the wisdom of biblical advice so the author encourages us to heed the dietary laws, not in a legalistic obedience, but as a way to honor our Creator with our bodies.

I was most interested in the extensive section on fasting. Because I’m on medication, I’m not able to go without food so fasting never seemed like an option to me. The author explained four types of fasting: normal fast, absolute fast, partial fast, and rotational fast. The latter two are options that don’t require complete abstinence from food, but focus on abstaining from particular types of food or rotating abstinence from different foods. I learned a lot from his teaching, especially about the health (and mental health) benefits of fasting.

Many of his chapters go into more technical detail than I wanted about scientific names of mono-whatevers and tri-somethings. Perhaps someday I’ll be more educated on these matters, but it was more than I was prepared to take-in right now. So I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. I’m sure it’s useful information to those who can grasp the technical details. Even so, I was able to skim these portions and still get helpful information on each topic covered.

Overall, I’d say it’s worth a read, whether or not you like the science parts. I learned several things, and I’m sure you will, too.

Great premise to the book. He completely lost me with the recipes that use ingredients that are not in a form close to the way God created them. The recipes need to back up the ideas in the book. The principles to live by make sense. Just eat real food. God has amazing powers to heal when we cut out the interference.

What we eat is something that will effect us every day of our life. If I had to recommend one book other than the Bible to help a Christian grow and be more effective in this life it would be this book. Satan should not be getting a victory in this area but he has been because of the ignorance of so many modern Christians and the lack of sound teaching in the Church. Why are so many Christians who love the Lord and want to serve him in such miserable health? Could it be that they are ignoring God's wisdom on what they should eat to keep themselves healthy but instead are just following the crowd and eating foods that are destroying their bodies. This book has over 700 scripture references yet distills God's wisdom on the subject of what we should eat to three basic principles. If one follows these principles they will find themselves eating organic foods and rejecting the highly processed, adulterated food products pushed on them by the world. They will eat food that's processed as little as possible and retains all the nutritional value and disease protecting elements that our Creator put in the foods for our benefit. And thirdly, they will not get involved in any food fads and will have a balanced diet that includes fasting on a regular basis to keep their digestive system in good shape and to find the types of foods that work best for them.
This book can be used as a reference for your family about each food group, why God designed it the way he did, why you should eat it, and why it is good for you. The many scriptures reveal that God has always had quite a bit to say about food and even why he declared that some foods should not be eaten. The health IQ survey itself is worth the price of the book but there is so much more. It's a book you will want to read over and over again and give as gifts to others to help them get some wisdom on the often confusing subject of what we should eat.
