A fifth-grade school teacher in southern Illinois, Develyn Worrell's nightmare begins one summer when she discovers her husband's infidelity. She divorces him without ever telling her twenty-one-year-old daughter why. Although Devvy has a heart change and desires for reconciliation, he dies before she can tell him of her desire. The daughter blames her mother for her father's death. Memories of a Dirt Road Town begins the story the following summer. Brokenhearted about her husband's death and her daughter's decision not to come home for the summer, Devvy decides to find a little dirt road town in Wyoming where she had vacationed as a child. She remembers fondly the sunset and a beautiful Roan horse. Upon arrival, Devvy purchases a Roan mare and a burro, rents a little cabin, and watches as God brings three very important men into her life.

Talk about Memories of a Dirt Road Town (Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1)

The principal character in the five-star Christian fiction book is Develyn Worrell. Bly has Dev, as she's called, do a lot of thinking and feeling; I normally don't like that, and it isn't a plus, but Bly makes it not a minus either. Dev is an Indiana school teacher; she returns to a Wyoming town she can barely remember from her girlhood, to escape memories of a divorce, an estranged daughter, and a disapproving mother. While in Wyoming, Dev meets many challenges, but survives. The book is a modern-day western, and a good one. David Carlyle, "Another Land."

Could really identify with this woman, and her adventurous spirit, which made it a great read for me....the horses were more believable than all the "available men" but that did make it more interesting. Also refreshing, not to have to read page after page of
sex scenes, not that I'm against it, but sometimes I think authors get a little carried away....and maybe forget they have written the same thing almost word for word in the previous chapters....?? All in all, I probably would have given this an extra half star, if we had them... a real enjoyable read!

This is the 1st book in a series of 3 books. It is about how it changes the life of a person when you go back and visit a place you visited 30 years ago. When you read this one you will definitely want to continue to read the 2nd and 3rd book in the series..

This is a great adventure about a school teacher from Indiana. She finds her great dream from a past adventure with her family at age 10. My greatest problem with her adventure was that she ended the book in the middle of a thought, without really ending her story properly you might say. But I knew that in order to continue I had to get the next book, "The Mustang Breaker".

I read this book in its entirety and the 3rd book in the series partially. First, a completely subjective gut, personal response: I am not that enthusiastic about Stephen Bly. Having said that, I am a woman and He is a man. His women characters are probably better written, actually, than many female authors writing male characters. That being said, I'm still not enamored with his writing. It is almost entirely dialogue with very little descriptive writing. The women talk in clipped non-introspective conversation, even in private with other close friends, almost like men. While some real women do, sorry, that sounds more like most men. And every man calling the protagonist "Devy-girl" as a cute nickname without even knowing her well? Either condescending cowboy macho or over the top stupid. Again, my own gut reaction, not trying to show Mr. Bly any disrespect as an author, God rest his soul. Finally, Quint and she kissing? Her character is written as more reserved initially but this scene is early in the first book. I suppose that might happen but then not to gush or even share that info with her best friend on the phone, ok man-like again, but really? Just seems little contradictory to her character.

On the other hand, my personal feelings aside, the story and writing are not bad (his handling of the dialogue-heavy writing is reasonably well done), it's nice to see real people with real jobs (discounting the minor character, Quint, knowing some famous celebrities) and some of the cowboys with very real disabilities (e.g. Tallon), and not all 20 something's with size 2 figures. Uncle Henry (the burro) is cute. It had a few enjoyable, funny moments but I personally can't recommend. I saw the other 4 and 5 star reviews. Maybe read them first. Wasn't for me and I am not invested enough in the characters to even care whether I finish.

This was a great story! It amazes me that a man can write such a wonderful story from a woman’s perspective!

I am so enjoying this story, that I'm already halfway into the second book of this triology. This would make a wonderful Lifetime movie its got so much happening that you don't want to put it down and you want to get right into the next book! Very well written and very interesting and love the humorous parts...I am interesting in seeing what else this author has written!
I really enjoy their novels; I wish they were all on the Kindle. I already have them all as paperbacks, but now I'm hooked on the Kindle and seem to want everything on that.No I don't know them personally, I'm not related and have never met them. But I sure enjoy their books. You finish feeling like good things can happen in life, and determined to live better yourself.
