Agnes Boulton's memoir of her first two years of marriage to Eugene O'Neill was published in 1958, two years after the premiere of O'Neill's masterpiece, Long Day's Journey into Night. Contemporary critics dismissed the book as impressionistic, and it received little popular attention. Now held as a classic depicting one woman's strivings for self-representation, this new edition restores two sections previously excised for now-obsolete legal reasons. The new text features corrected misspellings and the addition of footnotes to clarify reference points and correct errors. Boulton's memoir represents an important addition to women's literature, as well as literary biography and autobiography.

"Part of a Long Story" is a fascinating memoir that has been heavily criticized, examined, referenced, denounced, confirmed and relied upon by biographers and curiosity seekers alike to help explain the paradoxical life of Eugene O'Neill. He was at once one of the most private and yet self-exposed geniuses ever known to modern man. Rarely, if ever, has a writer divulged so much about his deepest self and yet remained such a mystery to so many.
.
His second wife Agnes Boulton, who was no slouch as a writer herself, attempted in this book to shed light on the matter. Here she took center stage to bring forth the truth, either as she understood it, or at least as she wanted it to be understood. Although she is often disregarded as a footnote in O'Neill's life, here she sought to make her mark as one of the most relevant and profound influences in the life of this prolific and colorful genius.
.
In reading Boulton's story, it becomes apparent that O'Neill would have been much less successful without her than he was by having been married to her for nearly a decade. She does come across as somewhat vague and even coy in her recollections, tending toward dubious and questionable assertions. But the book as a whole is a valuable treasure as a first-hand account of what it was like to be around Eugene O'Neill during the prime of his life.
.
"Part of a Long Story" is a must-have for anyone who is seriously interested in examining the life of Eugene O'Neill, or Agnes Boulton for that matter. In any case, the book achieves it true purpose: the crowning glory of the woman who successfully took her rightful place in history as the second Mrs. O'Neill along with all the heartache and glory that went along with it.

I'm an admirer of Eugene O'Neill's writing from my college days. Being able to read an intimate book written by his ex-wife seemed to be an opportunity to gain unique insight into the great writer.

The book was offered at a great price, the seller delivered it in record time, but most importantly, for a book this age, it is in incredible condition. The dust jacket is intact, the pages showed the type of aging you would expect in a fifty-some-odd year old book, but all in all, it is in beautiful condition.

I cannot wait to sit down to read it. My thanks to the seller! This buy was a great purchase. I'm very pleased.

I'm not a fan of Eugene O'Neill's personal life from what I've read about how he treated his children which seemed so cruel but I so loved this wonderfully written book by his second wife (who was also the mother of Oona and Shane).

This book covers the year they met and first year of marriage. It's not written like a "tell all", it's more lyrical and completely evokes the feelings of falling in love particularly at that age, in your 20s when there is a lot of turmoil and drama. And amazingly gave me a sense sympathy for Eugene, a troubled and self-absorbed artist.

I couldn't put it down and wish she had written more about her life because she was a wonderful writer. I would highly recommend it.
