What really happens when the most powerful man in the world invites the most famous woman in the world to dinner? What is life really like in the 650 rooms beyond the gates of Buckingham Palace? Who are the 50 people in the line of succession to the throne? What does a Lady-in-Waiting do? What do you actually say when it's your turn to meet royalty?

A Year with the Queen tells the story from the inside. No Monarch in history has travelled as far and met as many people as Queen Elizabeth II. And no book has revealed the workings of the Monarchy like this -- with members of the Royal Family and world leaders telling their own stories, too.

Like the brilliant television series it accompanies, A Year with the Queen shows the extraordinary world of the Monarch and her family -- from sacred constitutional talks with the Prime Minister to the razzmatazz of a stay at the White House and from a seaside stroll with the Prince of Wales to a weekend in Iraq with Prince Philip. Equally extraordinary is the work of the Royal Household team -- the man who carries the Crown around in a box, the team who counts out the medals, the chef who paints the chocolates, the in-house royal agony aunt....

The result is a book packed with fabulous photographs, important insights, wonderful anecdotes -- and plenty of advice, too. Ever wondered how to reply to a royal invitation? Or how to get one...?

During the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year, I was with a film crew blending in with the Balmoral wallpaper when David Cameron walked in to the Queen’s sitting room. Monarch and minister were quickly deep in conversation about murder. Mr Cameron had been in Manchester after the killing of two female police officers.

ROBERT HARDMAN: The Queen expressed 'great sadness' at the passing .

ROBERT HARDMAN: The Queen expressed 'great sadness' at the passing of a 'great friend and ally' of the UK after the death of President George . The Queen and the Duke also got along famously with the no-nonsense, mother-of-six Barbara Bush. To cap it all, it was the Bushes who laid on one of the most memorable state visits of the Queen's reign. While writing my new book, Queen Of The World, I obtained previously classified documents on this tour which show the depth of this friendship. For example, the Queen had arranged her own very special gift for the President.

Talk about A Year with the Queen

Mustard Forgotten
I am an ardent Royalist, and find so many Books about Royalty are just a re-hash of something ll read before. Not so this book. It is a frank and honest book, touching on the Working Lives of all the Senior Royals. If anyone imagines that being Royal would be fun, let me tell you, you are wrong! The book obviously begins with her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Bear in mind her advancing years, read about all her Public engagements, and it may surprise you when you find out that in any given year, she averages over 300 Public Appearances. The Princes Royal, Anne manages to top that figure. If she has use of the Royal Chopper, she will fit in a Breakfast engagement, manage another six or seven, sometimes not finishing the day till midnight. One could go on about all the others, but instead of me telling you how hard they work. You will not be disappointed, this I promise you

This book is a companion to the PBS series from several years ago.It is a good addition to the series if you have it or have seen all or parts of it. The book itself is photographed beautifully and the text is a good read.Definately a book to be looked at and re-looked at for many years to come.Funny, with all the fuss Annie Leibovitz seemed to cause at the "shoot", it is one of her pic's that made the cover. She makes the Queen look beautiful and regal.Hopefully, the Queen is appreciative of Annie's talent.

A very nice book.

Very interesting take/viewpoint from the inside of the "fishbowl." I had NO idea there was such effort and manpower put into every successful royal event! Wow!

If you've ever seen "Monarchy the Royal Family at Work" and enjoyed that show, then this is a book you will also enjoy

But my copy had many missing pages. I didn't learn until after I got the book that it was a former library book. What a disappointment.
