There was not one single monoplane in squadron service in 1936 when Wilfred Freeman accepted the task of choosing the aircraft with which to rearm the RAF. Freeman's ruthless quest for quality and exceptional organisational ability resulted in the RAF being equipped with a superb range of aircraft from the Spitfire and Lancaster to the Mosquito (Freeman's Folly) and the Merlin-powered Mustang.

Although intended as a biography this book represents an excellent purchase as a one volume look at the high command of the RAF and MAP from the pre-war expansion through the end of the war. The book has a few points that could easily be subject to contention. (Such as neglecting to mention the British disappointment with the P-38 was due to their decision to eliminate the turbochargers and the complete disparagement of the early Allison P-51 which completely overlooks the Allison was preferred over the Merlin by the British for low level interdiction.)
If you can accept fact the Sir Wilfrid gets complete credit for every positive event within the MAP, RAF, RN, and the US Army Air Corps, etc. you will learn a lot about the man and the country and ministries he served. The author has provided extensive footnotes and appendixes. The appendices covering aircraft and engine development in particular are excellent while others provide some political background.
Recommended for those interested in the RAF, MAP and British WWII procurement policies.

Freeman was the man in many critical decisions from the the 1930's through the war, because he dies so soon after the war he's been overlooked. This book helps balance the record. If his advice has been taken sooner the war wouldn't have been so desperate or long.
