7 Brides for 2 Brothers by Mark Donovan is a collection of family stories designed to spur the reader to tell his or her own family stories. The goals are not ambitious. They are two in number--laughter and tears. Like all good stories, these are both personal and universal. The stories pass over the centuries, uniting a family with its stories and its legends. Characters include the historic--such President Andrew Jackson--and the ordinary--such as Andrew Donovan who lost a fortune after the stock market crash of 1929.Each story is meant to strike a haunting chord with the reader, stirring misty memories, giving these memories new life. Donovan hopes the reader will be inspired to pass his or her own stories on to future generations. As Mark Donovan writes: "So herein lie my family stories. I don't know what will become of them in the years to come, but at least I will know that I have done my duty to family and to Western Civilization. That's right, my duty.So for anyone who might happen upon these words in the future I have a message for you. First, 'Hello, future!' Second, you have the same duty. You cannot let your stories die and turn to dust. Get going! Start writing, or recording, or telling your own stories. But hold on a minute, and wait until you read the following manuscript. I'm not writing this to manufacture some font-filled kindling."

In other words, this is a collection of the Donovan family stories.

In other words, this is a collection of the Donovan family stories. Just like all stories that have been passed down from generation to generation, it is sometimes difficult to separate fact from fiction

Title: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954). Seven Bridges for Seven Brothers" is, today, somewhat of a classic; Stanley Donen adapts the screenplay by Albert Hackett, Frances Goodrich and Dorothy Kingsley; their combined efforts are superb. I have grown up on this film and was surprised at the fact that, after having seen it very recently, it continues to hold up as well as it did when I was younger.

Based extremely loosely on the Stephen Vincent Benet story Sobbin' Women," Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is one of the best MGM musicals of the 1950s. Most of the story takes place on an Oregon ranch, maintained by Adam Pontabee (Howard Keel) and his six brothers, played by Jeff Richards, Russ Tamblyn, Tommy Rall, Mark Platt, Matt Mattox, and Jacques d'Amboise (it is no coincidence that five of those six boys are played by professional dancers). Mark Donovan's very creative book purports to be a family history, but it is really much more than that. Sure, there's a lot of his family lore, but the book also includes references to some famous people from history, sports stories and lots of very funny vignettes. But, more than that, Donovan has a great knack for presenting the reader with lessons about life; lessons that all of can can surely relate to and learn from. All in all, a very enjoyable read!

With the wit and wisdom of Robert Fulghum, Mark Donovan uses his own style to tell the importance of his family history and the roll it's played in influencing his life. His humor is sharp and his love for family is unbending. Keep the stories coming Mr. Donovan, your off to a great start.
