Separated from her real mother at birth, Anya grew up in terror of her drunken bullying uncle. Beaten, humiliated and sexually abused by him from the age of six, she thought her life couldn't get worse. But one day it did. I was used to Daddy screaming 'whore's child' at me, over and over again. But I couldn't get used to what he made me do. Anya was too terrified to tell anybody about what her uncle did to her.

Abandoned is the true story of a childhood full of secrets, abuse and a little girl who didn't belong. This was a sad book but a happy ending. Found the book hard to put down. Really liked the book. Something that could happen to anyone. com User, February 27, 2010. It took me a little time to get into Anya's memoir but after I read so far into it I was hooked. After reading about her horrible childhood and then her time as a homeless person I would have liked more detail as to where she ended up and exactly how she ended up there.

This is a sad, true story of a little girl who just wanted to be loved and to know who her parents were. I cannot understand the one review I read by someone who said they could not keep people straight, that her aunt is her mummy and her real mummy is someone else and her brothers and sisters are really her cousins...it was not difficult at all to keep everyone straight. The fact that this little girl turned out to be the woman she is today is amazing, because she really did not have a loving home at all and never really knew who her father was until she was older, although she did know her real mother had not kept her. Hard to imagine needing love and never getting it, except from the aunt she called "Mummy" who turned on her at one point. And to have survived the unimaginable sexual abuse by her uncle was also amazing. The fact that she survived all this and overcame it gives hope to others who may be in similar situations, and I hope someday she finds someone to love her and has children of her own that she can love as she never was.

The first half of Abandoned was…well, shocking and heartbreaking. I couldn’t believe how very cruel Anya’s uncle was being to her. And when the sexual abuse started, I had to put down the book several times to wipe away my tears. It was just too much. The last half of the story was just sad. It broke my heart that Anya would let her life slip out of control like that. I don’t agree that we should let the past impact on our future, especially since she had so many chances to live a successful life. Anyway, this is worth the read.

This little girl's life was pure hell! She was abandoned by her self-centered mother and left in the care of her aunt and abusive uncle. The uncle verbally and physically abused this little girl, although the aunt tried to protect her from him most of the time. It only gets worse. No child should ever be treated the way she was. How was she a threat to the uncle? I'll never understand people who mistreat children like that! Anya's story will break your heart! Sad story, but very well written.

I have bought her second book "In the Hands of Angels" but haven't read it yet.

I felt like a voyeur watching through the window of Anya's soul. The story of her painful childhood experiences, her lack of belonging and fear of abandonment coupled with her fear and distrust of men and the failure of the system would have been enough to destroy most. Ms. Peters provides insights into the human psyche and how deeply the need to belong and be loved are ingrained in all of us. On the other hand she reveals the deep fear, shame, and embarrassment that hinders people from getting help. Her faith and her lack of bitterness are admirable. Blogging about her circumstances were her self-therapy.

This was a hard book to read because of the story not the writing. I have always had compassion for the homeless, but this book has convicted me to do more to help.

Reality of life for so many. It can be hard to understand. I made some poor choices in my life. Bad marriage, bringing 5 children into this life. It was a time when I was very lucky that our welfare system was there to help me. I was lucky to be able to pull myself out. Lucky to have my Grandmother's help so my children really didn't notice how bad off we really were. With the welfare system changing, I see homeless families. They go house to house wearing out their welcome. No place to go. All I can say is I am lucky for the opportunities to not be in this situation.

This is a true story about a young girl who got caught up with her parents love affair and was kept a secret all her life. It's very touching and heartbreaking that her parents would not step up and accept her as their own. Insteaed she had to deal with growing up in a home where she was never accepted by her Uncle and was forced to deal with his anger towards her. I would recommend this story to anyone who wants to read about true life situations that could have been avoided if the grown up made better decisions.

Just goes to show you that no matter how bad things are or get there is always a way back. I was in an abusive relationship and found it hard and very frightening to get out of but I did eventually find my inner strength and got free. Now life is how it should has always been free from the fear and able to be me the person God intended me to be. It says something to feel safe in your own home. Anyas story was heartbreaking and inspiring , there is hope. Never give up for where there is a will there is way. Thank you for sharing your story , God bless you Anya :)
