A teenage boy lies on the pavement, bleeding to death from a stab wound; a distraught mom watches, in mute shock, as her daughter suffers a terrifying fatal asthma attack; a young girl is gang raped and her stricken boyfriend takes an overdose; a disturbed young man flings himself in front of a speeding train at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. Few people can imagine living in a world where such situations are part of everyday life. Yet for London Ambulance Paramedic Lysa Walder, these and thousands of other emergency calls are part of a day's work—scenes of tragedy, loss, and horror—but also stories of triumph and humor, and all the results of an urgent 999 call to the biggest and busiest free ambulance service in the world. Here, she tells the inside story behind the screaming sirens and flashing blue lights of the emergency services and reveals what it's really like to work in a job that frequently brings paramedic teams face-to-face with death—and destiny.

Is a realistic book of a paramedics life in London. Brilliant book as a retired nurse I had a lot of contact with the ambulance workers, and I know first hand the sort of things they have to put up with, I laughed and cried with them in the book and in real life, they do a great job and are always in the front line, I wish people would treat them with.

has been added to your Basket. Very good and short stories of all kind of cases. Some made me laugh out loud, others got tears in my eyes and some even made me angry!

I purchased this book for only a few dollars and will never regret it. I love books that are so medically detailed and found this one to be of no exception. It is brillliantly written, and for those of you without a medical degree it explains most of the terms in easy to understand language. It is very interesting and I will never regret buying it. I definately reccomend it to anyone who loves a good medical novel!

This book is very well written using direct and concise language. The descriptions are very vivid and Lysa Walder makes you feel as though you are right there in the middle of the action. The stories are very well structured and it's definitely a one sitting read. I couldn't put it down and have passed it on and reccommended it to many people. Lysa's attention for the small human details is very touching. A rollercoaster of emotions, twists, turns and surprises. Definitely not for the faint hearted. Some of the tales make you lose faith in humanity and others more than equally make you regain it. A brilliant and I would say vital read.
