There is no shortage of donors today. What is lacking is our ability to relate to the donors we already have. That, in essence, is the message of Thomas Wolf's book, How to Connect with Donors and Double the Money You Raise. Too often we see donors through the distorted lens of retention rates, average gifts, moves management, and gift table place setters. It is as if our donors have become video game avatars we can manipulate. While that may help us harvest low-hanging gifts, fundraisers who reap the real bounty do something many neglect in this era of Facebook. They engage their donors in a multitude of ways, large and small, as Wolf demonstrates through irresistible, real-life stories. How to Connect with Donors and Double the Money You Raise convincingly shows that successful fundraising is all about turning a name into a relationship. When you do that, the money will flow. Complements Jerold Panas' classic book, Asking.

This book promises to "double the money you raise. That might, in fact, be underselling. I suspect, judging from the hundreds of charities whose donor communications I've analyzed over the years, that many raise nothing but the easiest money out there, the lowest of low-hanging fruit.

Can they be successful in connecting with donors as you prescribe? When I started out, I was extremely uncomfortable trying to connect with donors. But it is a skill anyone can learn. Sure there are some people who are just naturally outgoing.

I'm almost through with the book and it's not terrible but I feel like it is too shallow and doesn't give enough substance.

This is a slim little book. You could read it through in only a couple of hours. But it took me longer than that to get through it. He would talk about something he had done in the past, and I would lay the book aside and realize that I had had some similar experience in raising money. Often I would get an idea and have to stop reading and think about applying what he said in my next fundraising effort.

Ideas to help you in your efforts are what these kinds of little books are all about. Not only did I get some new ideas, but when I read the book the second time I got some more ideas. I'm putting this book on a small shelf I have of other little books. There are about six of them on the shelf now. I try to re-read them every few months. As I said, these are small books, they don't take long to read. But just getting one or two new ideas each time I go through them makes my job a lot easier.

It seems that each time I read them I find myself open to ideas in a new area. I get something out of them that I guess I just wasn't ready to get the last time through. ==If you raise money for a non-profit, as either a beginner or an expert you'll get something out of this book.

This book promises to "double the money you raise." That might, in fact, be underselling. I suspect, judging from the hundreds of charities whose donor communications I've analyzed over the years, that many raise nothing but the easiest money out there, the lowest of low-hanging fruit. Why? Because they do not understand the human angle very well, if at all. They focus on "we need cash." They do not focus on "why does a person really give." The cure? Pick any chapter in Tom Wolf's immensely charming and humanizing new book, HOW TO CONNECT WITH DONORS. I (like pretty much every human ever born) am a sucker for a well-told tale and Tom Wolf, whom I briefly encountered back in the 1980s when he was beating the corporate bushes to pitch funding for the arts, is an intensely charming writer. This book is dangerous to open: you cannot stop reading. And why would you want to? This is high level mentoring from an accomplished source. You're invited along with Tom on "ask" after "ask," each of his anecdotes revealing the honest humanity that underlies successful "major gifts" fundraising.

Raising money for nonprofits has always seemed difficult and vaguely unpleasant to me so I've been reluctant to help out some local groups that have asked for my help. But reading Tom Wolf's sprightly prose, I'm beginning to wonder if maybe it's not as daunting as I thought. Not only are his stories entertaining, but they always serve to illustrate an important lesson. The book is full of those lessons and Wolf's stories make it much easier for them to sink in. Given what I've learned in just my first read-through, I'm much more willing to lend a hand - and will do that with a stronger grounding in how to approach the task.

The value of this book far exceeds its length. You'll find yourself coming back time and again for a quick refresher course!

Tom Wolf shares a wealth of wonderful experiences about the connections he's made with donors through the years. Each story is engaging, pertinent and pithy. And Tom covers not just the stories that make you wonder if that sort of thing could ever happen to you, but he also shares the stories that illustrate the challenges and pitfalls that are an important part of the process. The writing is clear and engaging, the characters real. I plan to purchase this book for all of my clients because it does such a great job of capturing the honest and human exchanges that are the real stuff of fundraising.
This enjoyable, easy-to- read book will inspire and challenge you, no matter your profession. This book, like Homer's Odyssey, reminds us that life is a journey, not a destination. And, what makes life rewarding, note-worthy and sometimes scary are the people we meet, befriend, or fail to approach properly along the way. Each of us, no matter our job or field of employment is a fund raiser, or advocate, if we enjoy and believe in our work. We want to share our passion and we hope in doing so, that others will share their resources --- their passion, creativity, time, money, etc. with us to make our work stronger. In this book Tom Wolf outlines how to do this with authenticity, grace and humor. And then he goes a step further, and challenges us to hold ourselves accountable for nurturing relationships first, and counting dividends second.
