I found this book to be written in a very simplistic style. Essentially a high school type essay with little to no imagination and very predictable. The first half of the book is essentially a rundown of platitudes of "how to be great"... Don't assume talent will get you there alone, work harder than everyone else, 10,000 hours of practice, etc. etc. Look inside yourself and know what you really want to achieve greatness etc.

The second half basically layers on a very thick layer of Jesus- first philosophy that somewhat contradicts the first half... basically the message is that to be truly great you need to look outside yourself to religion to guide you.

I found the book to be quite childish and the first half, which at least had some redeeming qualities as a list of motivating cliches, was overshadowed by the second half which was only about pushing a religious agenda.

You'll see this review for all the Jon Gordon books I read. I actually bought "Training Camp" first, because I wanted my daughter (competitive soccer player) to work on her mental game. I read it first to be sure it was appropriate for her age (15). Well, I loved it! I found many helpful things for me. I was getting in a rut at my job and after looking inside myself, it seemed as though I was always angry and frustrated. I reached a point where I decided to change my outlook on everything, and whatever happens externally, happens. After Training Camp, I read the entire Jon Gordon series. They are very easy reading, regardless of age level (teens and up). People might complain that his books are too basic, but if you don't need a PHD to understand something, why write it like you need one? Each book has very simple steps and/or lessons to move you in the right direction. They didn't all work for me, but they all changed my outlook. Great stuff!

I loved reading this book! It inspired me to stay focused on striving to reach my goals daily and to have faith that I will eventually get there. It also provides a great foundation in servant leadership and how bringing out the best in others, brings out the best in you.

This is a great book to walk you through your life's journey while reading about Martin's journey. Amazing lessons and most important that you are not here to show others how great you are but how great you can make those around you by showing them you care and how to be their best. Awesome book!

Wow. This book is truly inspiring and encouraging to anyone. You can apply the principles to any profession or just daily living. I love that the story is real life. Truly motivates one to get their priorities straight.
Great story on how we all perceive success and faith. The realization that it is pride that is a major block to be the best and letting go was stunning. A must read for any coach or athlete at all levels.
