Talk about Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business

When a CEO and client of mine said, "Hey Kristin, you absolutely must read this book," I immediately ordered my copy on Amazon. I flipped through the pages and saw an assessment/checklist right at the beginning along with a visual model called the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS). I then started reading and I was hooked.
It's simple and practical advice to grow a small business into a big business, without too many Dilbert words or crazy ideas. The principles, system and tools are based on sound business practices that are simple (but not easy!) to implement. It kind of reminds me of Verne Harnish's Scaling Up: How a Few Companies Make It...and Why the Rest Don't (Rockefeller Habits 2.0), but this book feels more chatty and less intimidating.
I particularly enjoyed Chapters 2-3 which talks about building a true leadership team and the vision it will take to grow the company. Just taking your leadership team through these two chapters and having a frank, robust discussion about the topics and questions sounds like it would be well-worth the investment of time and energy.

I own a small business and this is by far the best book I've ever read. I don't have a background in business or marketing- I literally turned my side hustle into a legit job that pays my bills, and this book has helped me tremendously. It lays everything out with action steps that you can take immediately to improve your business. Additionally, it has "tests" that you can complete to gauge where your business at at, on a level of success, and you can track your progress.

This was one of the most helpful business system types of books I've read. If you've read any of the E-Myth books you're on the right track but this book actually gives the science behind building systems and how to write them and implement them as well. Very good information that will force you to stay on track if you have big dreams for your business. I highly recommend it but I would 1st read his book "Get a Grip" because it puts it all in story fashion so you can follow an actual company implementing what you've learned. Makes Traction easier to understand.

This book was a recommendation from a friend who also started his own business. This book provided a great framework to increase the productivity and efficiency of your business. There are several thought exercises to help put everything together as you go along. I already had my vision sheet from previous books, but this book made it so that I have more specific and longer term goals to work towards. By setting "rocks", you will also position yourself to better achieve your goals, which for every goal setter out there knows is important. I'm still working on integrating all the information in the book into my own business, which I think is an important aspect of traction. It's not reaching an end goal necessarily, it's building the process. So if you are looking for a get rich quick book, this isn't for you. If you are looking for a book to help build a solid foundation for long term business success, this is for you.

I was put off by the front end of this book. It struck me as too prescriptive - do this, follow these steps and everything will work out. As I read on, the model became more clear. I began to see connections between the author’s framework and that which I’ve read in similar books. That recognition made it clear that the foundational tools - trust, teamwork, leadership, commitment, vision, alignment, accountability, process, data, etc. - were as important to this author’s approach as they are to the approach that other others have crafted as their own. Whatever name you put on the package, the core principles are the same. I think that as long as the leadership team recognizes these building blocks and diligently assembles them, progress is achievable. With that in mind, the EOS framework has potential. With that in mind, the book has value, in my opinion.

This book came highly recommended and did not disappoint. As an avid reader this book condenses knowledge from dozens of sources to an easy and quick methodology that starts with the vision, defines structures for accountability and provides a framework to drive your entrepreneurial venture to success. If you are not an avid reader, read this as the one source to get everyone on your team operating from the same script. If you are an avid reader, read this as a process syllabus for the multitude of books you have absorbed.
