[Library Edition Audiobook CD format in sturdy Vinyl case.] [*Read by Taylor Mali and Sid Fleischman] Harry Houdini, born Ehrich Weiss, never did anything by half measure. Once he decided to become a magician, he became the King of Cards, the Prince of Air, the Genius of Escape, and Prof. H. Houdini. And why not? He could walk through walls, defeat any lock, make elephants disappear with the snap of his fingers, and pick up needles with his eyelids! -- Or could he? Fact or fiction? Legend or liar? We will never know for sure. But here in all its riveting glory is Sid Fleischman's witty and insightful biography of magic's greatest showman, daredevil, and escape artist ever -- the Great Houdini!

This biography gives an in depth look at Harry Houdini's magical life.

Author Sid Fleischman has been a professional magician, and he knew the subject's wife. So he has both a personal and professional connection to his material, and it shows on nearly every page. In this lively, entertaining biography, Fleischman does more than just retell the major events of Houdini's life, and even more than separate myth from fact (a tricky job in this case). He carefully walks readers through the evidence and his own reasoning process, making good use of his insider knowledge along the way.

The Story of the Great Houdini. Who was this man who could walk through brick walls and, with a snap of his fingers, vanish elephants? In these pages you will meet the astonishing Houdini-magician, ghost chaser, daredevil, pioneer aviator, and king of escape artists.

I got this book for my 8 year old son, thinking it was the kind of topic he might enjoy. Certainly the author has done his research and homework into the life of Houdini, and it is the kind of story that many kids would love.
However, for me the book was marred by being, frankly, very badly written. The author employs every cliche, clunky metaphor and irrelevant digression possible. The awful prose kind of ruins the story as well as making it hard to work out what he is saying sometimes.
The Sinners from Mitar
got it for my son's reading class requirement and he really enjoyed it.

No issues with book.

This book was on the summer reading list for my daughter's rising 5th grade class. She enjoyed reading it and I read it too and learned a lot about Houdini. It is well researched and well written.

I bought this book for a Valentine's present for my husband, who has been doing magic tricks and illusions since he was a young boy. He has always been fascinated by the Great Houdini, so when I saw this book, I took a chance. We have both enjoyed this book tremendously. It is written in very nice, simple language, with large print, and wonderful never-seen before photos. I would highly recommend this little magical gem!
I have never been disappointed by a Sid Fleischman book and this one is no exception. The work is well-researched and the photos are phenomenal. My only heads up is that I did get this book for my almost 9 year old who is a great reader, but this was way over his head. I would say that as an independent read it is for tweens and up, however it made a great read-a-loud and vocabulary/history builder for him. Thank you Sid for another stellar piece of literature.
