Latin for Children Primer C concludes the three-book series designed to begin in third grade. Chapters 1, 2, 7 and 24-27 consolidate and review material presented previously in the series: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension nouns; verb endings for present, imperfect, and future tenses; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person personal pronouns; and demonstrative pronouns hic, ille and iste.

New material consists of third declension adjectives (1, 2, and 3 termination adjectives), perfect, pluperfect, and future perfect verb endings, more 3rd and 4th conjugation verbs, possum with infinitives, imperatives review, fourth and fifth declension nouns, and correlative adverbs.

Each regular (non-review) chapter introduces ten new vocabulary words for memorization, reviews five words and gives a chant (noun endings, verb endings, etc.). Memorization is a large part of studying. There is also a short grammar lesson in each chapter, along with memory, translation, and activity worksheets and a (practice) quiz. Every 3-6 chapters is a review chapter with no new material except derivatives for the review words and sentences to translate.

A week per chapter is planned to finish the book in a school year. By the end of the book, 240 new vocabulary words have been taught, and 120 vocabulary words reviewed. The publisher has a helpful website with a fun review games (best suited for review after the words are already learned). [...]gives a good preview of materials. [...] hosts the review games.

ADVANTAGES: A solid, methodical program; continuity through the series; concepts presented as part of a paradigm rather than randomly so the structure of Latin is learned. Availability of a coordinated activity book, history reader, pronunciation CD, and instructional DVDs to complement the book.

DISADVANTAGES: Some students who begin the program in this third book can find it challenging or difficult, as the reviews move quickly. Those students without good study skills can quickly fall behind (as in any approach). The addition of the activity and hitory books would be time consuming, at least taught at the fifth grade level. In 30 minutes/day, I can usually cover the material and assess in a five days/chapter approach for Primer C, but without much time left over.

This heavy weight paper, large print book is made to be expensive rather than helpful. The lessons are unnecessarily cute and uninteresting. There are many better Latin text books for children & others out there.
