In a society that tries to still that we no longer need family, but a "village", a "community" or a program is enough to raise our children, this book illustrates the opposite. Without family and tradition, people die and disappear. We end up without values, beliefs and faith. As a homeschooling family, we treasure our time together. We read this book together, and my children were quick to ask questions: "why did they send the children to a boarding school?" A must read if you value your children.

This is a beautiful book, illustrated by one of the best American Indian artists alive today. The story is poignant and true, and shows how the strength of the individual spirit. This tale, of children who resist the regimentation of an Indian boarding school and return to their homeland, deserves to be widely shared.
