What does a shy girl want to be when she grows up? A doctor, but not just any doctor—this little girl wants to care for creatures who may seem intimidating, but are really very shy, just like she is. David Mack’s extraordinary picture book debut is perfect to read aloud with creatures little and big, shy and outgoing, who believe in the magic of imagination.

She wants to be a doctor that cares for creatures who are too shy to be seen by normal people

I love this book! It's great for children and is whimsical and fun, very similar to Dr. Suess books, which I also love! I've bought this book 6 times now and have given it to all the special little ones in my family. She wants to be a doctor that cares for creatures who are too shy to be seen by normal people. If Big foot stubs his toe, she wants to be the one who cares for him, or if the unicorn breaks his horn, she'll tape it together. The Lock Ness Monster wouldn't be afraid of her, nor would all sorts of mystical creatures. People who are shy-or know a very shy child-will appreciate this book.

Talk about The Shy Creatures

I have been a fan of David Mack's Kabuki comics for years. When I saw this children's story originally tucked inside one of the comics, I knew that I'd be reading it to a special child one day. So I had to buy it for my nephew who is shy and a little fearful. I'm hoping the representations of the "monsters" as shy creatures that just need to be understood will help him through this phase. This is a wonderful book with a great message. It has classic Dr. Seuss style rhyme scheme and imagery, but do not mistake it for Dr. Seuss. It is an original piece of work that should be appreciated on it's own.

I read this to my two granddaughters (ages 5 & 3) and this became their most requested book. They now "read" it to me they have heard it so much. I have taped them "reading" this book. When they are grown and may have children of their own I would like to give this book to them. That is why this is the second copy of this book I have purchased, so they would each get a copy. It's endearing and funny. A delightful read.

My son has loved this book since he was 3 years old. I had to keep checking it out at the library and sometimes it wasn't in, so finally I just bought it. It's really cute.

I must say before I write this review that I'm a fan of David Mack's work. I was nervous that if I didn't like this book I would have to lie to him and say I did. There is no need to lie, this book was enjoyed by my whole family. I wish you the best of luck in your new direction, no mater where it may lead David. We really loved the new book. My daughter made me read it three times in a row, that ranks up there with her Disney books. That's high praise. Best of luck....

The shy girl in this picture book wants to be a doctor when she grows up, but not just any doctor.

People who are shy--or know a very shy child--will appreciate this book. It's humorous, has interesting, colorful illustrations including pen-and-ink, watercolor and collage.

The Shy Creatures is good for any age or grade, though it reads at a level for a very young child. My five-year-old enjoyed it. This would make a beautiful gift for your favorite child, shy or not.

Armchair Interviews says: Nice gift for that special child.
How my ratings work:
5 - I really liked/loved it
4 - I liked it
3 - Could've been better/worth a look
2 - Just didn't live up to the potential
1 - Simply awful

I had the privelage of meeting David Mack at a comic book convention yesterday, he's a very friendly guy, and this is a very cute and sweet book. I think it'll speak to little kids who love mythical creatures and who may suffer from shyness as well. It may not become a literary children's classic, but I really feal that kids will love this book.
