Summerbath Winterbath book. Eileen Spinelli, Elsa Warnick (Illustrator). This is an exceptional example of lyrical poetry illuminating how bathing occurred a century or more ago. It doesn't delve into endless detail about the circumstances of bathing so long ago, before the age of bathtubs, but it does offer a nice piece of poetry that can be used as a model for children's writing.

Eileen Spinelli's text is an authentic tribute to these migratory creatures. I thank all three Air Highnesses (Cranes, Spinelli and Warnick) for the inspired perspective their collaboration brings.

Summerhouse Time, illustrated by Emily Lisker, Simon & Schuster (New York, NY), 2001, illustrated by Joanne Lew-Vriethoff, Knopf (New York, NY), 2007. A poet and teacher of creative writing, Eileen Spinelli has produced numerous books for young children that combine the author's love of rhyme with her understanding of how young people view the world. The mother of six children and an experienced bedtime-story reader, Spinelli has a good sense of what works and what does not work in the arena of children's pic

Officer McGinnis spends the day in a cold bath. Find all the books, read about the author, and more. From the opening lines (Sun sizzled. Hair frizzled), Spinelli (Summerhouse Time) jauntily establishes the theme for this tale of one sweltering week in the town of Lumberville, long before the advent of air conditioners. Beginning on a blistering Monday, the day-by-day chronicle reveals how residents cope. Abigail Blue and her brother Ralphie open a lemonade stand, but two days later forgot about the lemonade and just sold ice. Lottie Mims takes four cold showers one day and on the next wore her bathing suit to clean house.

SUCH a wonderful story and a good way to teach our little ones what life was like not so long ago in our country. Beautiful writing and illustrations. I'm saddened that it isn't in print anymore. Snag this book while you can.

Summerbath Winterbath revels in family harmony and the rhythym of the seasons. The gradeful text and the muted, almost reproduction type illustrations blend like the strains of a fugue. Each are rich in details, yet together they vibrate a mesage of close relationships, simple past times and the pleasure of a bath embellished by the celebrated season. No only will children glean information about turn of the century living from this treasure, but they will gain a new appreciation for family and nature.
