Read with my year 1 class today as Julia Jarman is visiting our school soon. It's an entertaining book and every teacher’s worst nightmare of loosing children at the zoo. It would be a great bedtime read for younger children. The illustrations are very good and detailed. This went down quite well. Children liked the pictures but did not enjoy this quite as much as some other books they have read recently.

Julia Jarman has won the Stockport Schools' Book Award twice for her lively picture book texts. Julia used to be a teacher but was encouraged to start writing by her three children who asked for 'real characters like us'. When she became a grandmother, it provided the perfect inspiration for her picture book texts. Julia often visits schools and libraries where she enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for facts and fiction.

Julia Jarman decided to be a writer when she was eight. Her first book was published in 1985 by Andersen Press, who have taken all her novels since, many of which have been short-listed for prizes. Ghost Writer was Highly Commended by the judges of the NASEN award. She has also written a popular series featuring the Time-Travelling Cat, the latest of which was published in August 2010: The Time Travelling Cat and the Great Victorian Stink.
