Talk about Ellie's Bad Hair Day (Ellie and Oscar)

Auau
I had the delight of an overnight with my 4-weeks-old first granddaughter a couple of weeks ago (after having had two sons of my own followed by three grandsons), and as I gazed at her precious little face, couldn't help thinking to myself how I hoped she'd be able to rise above so many of the silly things we women seem to obsess about - including myself! - in the "looks department", and what more common gripe do we have than that dreaded "bad hair day"?! I came across this book when I was searching for items to begin building a little children's library for her, and couldn't help chuckling to myself when I saw the title (especially since Ellie happens to be my granddaughter's name!)

This is a husband/wife (an art director at an ad firm and an illustrator/magazine art director) collaboration created for their own daughter, and you can tell! LOTS of bold colors, and one of the most unique books I've come across with it's various sizes of text, fonts, arrows all over the place - I guess some would consider it "busy", but I rather like it - I think it reflects the way children think, their minds always seeming to be racing a mile a minute. It tells the story of how Ellie (for whom everything is a superlative... either the very best or the very worst), her even-keeled bunny friend, Oscar, and their adventure around the world on her scooter to find someone whose hair was just as "wild" as hers. They end up lost, and as Ellie's friends - who love her JUST the way she is - search for her in a helicopter, it ends up being that terrific, crazy hair that's the beacon. Ellie realizes "Different is good. And it's good to be different," with her telling Oscar that night as they drift off to sleep, "This has been a good hair day."

Obviously this is a book intended for older children, so it won't be immediately shared with my granddaughter, but I'll look forward to the day I do share it along with the reassurance that she is loved and appreciated just the way SHE is!

Very cute book about accepting our differences.

I love this book. My daugthe has curly hair and this book relates to her. The colors are great teaching our kids it okay to be different.
