Lovely illustrations in this tender loving story of a Farm lady who grieves the loss of there best friend, her husband and then in time finds companionship in the cat he left behind. Good story and beautiful art work make for an inviting story book for children.

"The Very Best of Friends" is illustrated by Julie Vivas. Her watercolor paintings of round, warm people and friendly animals grace such books as "Wilfred Gordon MacDonald Partridge", "I Went Walking", and "I Went Visiting". "The Very Best of Friends" is about a quirky older farm couple (Jessie and James) and James's cat, William. Jessie tolerates William, who is James's best animal friend, until James dies. James's death takes a hard toll on both Jessie and William, until Jessie sees what she must do in order to finally go on with her life. "The Very Best of Friends" is filled with a humor that even adults will laugh at and quality illustrations everyone will enjoy.

Nice story and the book was in fair/good condition.

Exceptional, in that it takes an unexpectedly real look at grief, with a spare narrative and gorgeous watercolor illustrations. With a kindergarten teacher/reading specialist wife, our house was filled with kids books, and this one seemed pretty standard as it introduces you to the farming couple and the cat who only likes the husband. "And then one day James died." I literally gasped when I reached that completely unexpected page, with the poignant illustration of the ambulance vanishing in the distance. The next page contains one of the most striking illustrations I've ever seen in a "kids" book ... or possibly any book ... the wife sitting on the steps with all the loss and grief in the world written in her eyes. The depiction of the unattended mail piling up and the cat going feral are all very real as well. It ends well; there is recovery from grief, and new friendship, and a new normal after the loss. Someday I'd like to find out what the story behind the creation of this book is.
After my husband died, I was alone except for his little Papillon dog and my own dogs and cats. I ignored his dog. She was so sweet to me but I never appreciated her. Until I read this book. It was just a book I was going to sell but I loved the cover. I read it and broke into tears before I could finish. I struggled through the story. . .I looked down through my tears and saw a sweet little face begging for attention. I picked her up and she licked my tears away. That was 8 years ago. We are the Best of Friends.
