My kiddos (3 years and 15 months) absolutely adore the Pookie books! They are really fun to read aloud (and hold up well over repeated readings!). Also a nice touch that Pookie is illustrated in such a way that s/he could be a girl or boy - I like that.

One thing that surprised me when I received this box set is that it only includes 4 of the 5 books in the full Pookie collection. Missing is the wonderful "Happy Birthday Little Pookie". This oversight was my own fault - I simply didn't read the titles that closely, but it is a disappointment, since I was expecting all 5.

These are wonderful. I got the boxed set based on the "What's wrong little pookie" book and even though I had it. On the back it showed there were 5 pookie books so I ordered the boxed set, but I wasn't paying careful attention and the book does not have all 5. I'm somewhat dismayed that the collection is not complete and I cant fathom why not (each individual book lists all 5 books). Great books but minus 1 star for not being complete.

My son is autistic, and he loved the "Little Pookie" books from age four to age five. We read three books to him every night, and give him the option to pick the books. He usually leans toward Boynton books because they have a nice rhyme pattern, easy-to-turn pages, and the books are short enough that he does not lose interest.

I am not sure if we own all the Boynton books, but we own a lot of them. (His max attention span at that age was "Goodnight Moon", and almost all the Boynton books are shorter than that.)

Anyway, when we bought the big box of Little Pookie, my son asked for "Three Little Pookie books" for quite a while. In a way, this is just him being lazy, because that is easier to do that than to name three separate books, but in a way, it is just him returning to the comforting world of Little Pookie each night before bed.

He has recently started to imitate some of the antics of Little Pookie, including wearing Daddy's clothes, and hiding his nose under the covers. (For those of you not familiar with autism, this is a positive development, it means he is ready to imitate "peers" in certain settings. )

I really should send Sandra Boynton a note of thanks, but I will settle for a positive review on Amazon.

Edit: added early 2014: Lately, every time we go to the library, we let my son pick out bedtime books. With his newfound power, he picks out the longest books he can find in the children's section. We suspect that he is trying to delay bedtime as long as possible. After reading a few dozen children's books, I miss the Boynton books. Here is a brief list of the things I wish other children's authors would learn from Boynton:

1. Illustrations. Boynton illustrations are always good. She makes it appear effortless, although I am sure it is not. Although many children's books are wonderfully illustrated, some of them appear to have been thrown together with little or no thought. We have two books right now (by other authors) where the character's expressions are the exact same on every page.

2. Endings. Boynton realizes that many parents are using these as bedtime books. The Pookie books all end on a calm note, and (of course) one of them ends with Little Pookie going to sleep. We have read children's books by other authors that start off quiet and end on high energy. It may not matter to some kids, but it does to ours.

3. Language. When you read Boynton books, the language is all at the same level, the rhymes are consistent. With some other authors, I find myself suddenly having to explain words (and concepts) that he will not encounter again for many years. We have one book, by a different author, where the central word in the whole book is a made-up word. We have another book where it starts off rhyming and then stops.

Although we save quite a bit of money by getting books from the library, I miss the Boynton books.

Very cute! We like "Dance, Dance Little Pookie" and "What's Wrong Little Pookie" the best. "Little Pookie" and "Night, Night Little Pookie" are good as well. If we rap (as best as Asian parents can rap) the books, our little one squeals with laughter. I'm not sure if it's because he enjoys the books or if he's just laughing at his rhythm-challenged and tone-deaf parents. Nevertheless, he loves these books. And we enjoy them too.

Sandra Boynton is my all-time favorite children's book author (well, tied with Dr. Seuss, but nobody beats Dr. Seuss). She is the master of the board book genre aimed at very young children, and as a parent of a 1-year-old, I really appreciate her work! She has a wry and absurd sense of humor that can make even mundane subjects (counting, the alphabet) come alive, and she also has a way of connecting to your feelings for your child. The Pookie books in this collection are some of her best work. They are fun, funny, and touching. Little Pookie seems to take on the personality of every child in these books, just like his mother takes on the personality of every mother. These are books you and your child will treasure, and if they are your first Boynton books, you had better be prepared to buy a whole lot more, because you will.

We love these books! Even though they are "board" books my kids especially loved them when they were older (3, 5 and 7). I always read them in a funny voice and they just love them. Very cute! Bought this set for a friend. Great gift!

I love Boynton and her books, and I love sharing them with my grandkids!

And you can't start tempting them with books too young!
These are 2 yr old's favorite books from Sandra Boynton, next to Snuggle Puppy. Whatever book we read before bed, we also have to throw in a Pookie book, too. Cute little pig and great rhyming stories. Love that we could buy a whole boxed set. It does not include one of the Pookie books, though.
