Babette Cole writes a children's book that adults will find fascinating. She tells a child's story with straightforward cause and effect, no subtext wanted or needed for children. However, for the adult reader, she gives them subtext, if they are clever enough to understand her insights. What subtext! The dog is a doctor, hence Dr. Dog, living in London with an Irish immigrant family, the Gumboyles, whose intellects have been allowed to atrophy by sloth. Dr. Dog leaves them behind in London as his doctor, another doctor dog, prescribes a stress relieving holiday. And, then the Gumboyles appear on the island as they cannot do without his medical guidance and his problem solving. The situation and the resolution are satisfying to children and adults. And the illustrations are delightful!!!

Dr Dog is one of my favorite books, so my sister sent me a copy of a Dose of Dr Dog she ordered from the UK. It just isn't the laugh a minute book the first one was.
