I bought this book after becoming obsessed with The Great British Bake Off on PBS. I'm an American so most of these recipes are new to me. There's a good variety and also some great tips on types of ingredients, bakeware to use, etc. Word to the wise to my fellow American bakers, there's a temperature conversion chart at the front of the book, but keep an eye on your bake. Some of mine have cooked much faster than the time listed in the book.

Wonderful recipes, but a bit of a challenge from the US side of the pond. Our ovens don't have the same settings, so it's kind of a challenge to guess at temperature/fan speed conversions. Google helps considerably with measurement translations, and we've found that the extra challenges are still worth the effort.

Easy recipes. Wife loves it. Careful of product substitutions like british icing sugar - it is not the same as confectionare sugar, has no corn starch or clumping agents. look for 10x sugar with nothing added

I used to bake a lot but gave it up 10 years ago since I am living alone in a new town. Watching Mary Berry and Mr. Hollywood on Netflix got me excited about baking again. This book is very well organized, the recipes are easy to find and to follow, there are lots of great pictures since some of the baked goods may be unfamiliar to Americans so we can tell what our efforts should produce.
I had become afraid of baking , I thought I was getting too old and disorganized, Mary Berry is SIX years older than I am, if she can do it then so can I.

I've made a bunch of cakes from this, and the instructions have been clear, and the flavors outstanding.

The only thing I've had issues with is the cooking time. The cooking times seem pretty close when cooking in cast iron, but standard baking pans need far, far less than stated. I've ruined a couple of cakes, even when reducing cooking time. For example, The "Cut & Come Again" cake on p90, you're meant to bake it for 75-90 mins @ 350'F. I baked it for 50 mins, and it was still significantly overcooked (inedible). I had a slightly flatter cake tin than suggested, which may have contributed a small amount, but not enough to produce the result. I'm going to try this again, and check the cake at 30 mins.

Overall though, Mary's a winner and despite needing to fiddle with the timing, this has become my new favorite cake book.

Cookbook includes a conversion table for oven temps which is very helpful for those of us in the states and those who do not have a convection oven. Thank you!!
The recipes are in grams and ounces so you can be successful no matter how you measure. The front of the book describes various key ingredients we all use when baking along with explanations for the various names we call the same thing on this side of the pond. Strong flour vexed me but from her writing it is clear that Miss Mary is likely talking about what we call bread flour with it's higher protein levels. Lovely book, well laid out and easily used by beginner and accomplished bakers.
