This book's author grew up during the US's Great Depression. Filled with simple recipes for feeding a family well on a tight budget, this has fit my needs as a man who needs his recipes kept simple, and who became unemployed from the increasingly-obsolete field of electronics repair at near-retirement age due to the current Great Recession. It has become my favorite cookbook.
Note that the recipes in this book strongly rely on various "starch" ingredients such as pasta, rice, potatoes, etc. Current dietary fashion regards such carbohydrates as taboo, and if the reader ascribes to that concept, this book would not be well-received.

Honestly these or when you're down to your last nickel. In fact I have give her one of these books to my son and then panicked when I couldn't find my original so I ordered another one. Then I found my original but that is fine I do not ever want to lose this book

Replacing an old book I seem to have lost. So glad to have it. It is not always appropriate to how we eat now but I can sub in some better stuff. And it has nutritional info that I always found helpful.

This is my recently deceased mother-in-law's cookbook. Everyone in the family (and it's quite a large family) owns at least one of these cookbooks. And they all need rebinding! It has a permanent holder and takes precedence in my kitchen over 'Julia's Kitchen Wisdom: Essential Techniques and Recipes from a Lifetime of Cooking' (about the same price). Every cook should own both. Louise Newton, the elder, cooked Sunday dinner every Sunday for 40+ years and for 25 of those years, my family joined in from next door. It was the highlight of our week. She made vegetarian dishes when our kids were die-hard vegans and vegetarians, but traditional Sunday dinner was presented for the rest of us. We still find gems in the cookbook and we've been using it since the 70s.

You won't go wrong!

I have a whole row of cookbooks, but I actually use this one all the time. As a newly married 22 year old my sis gave me a copy, and 14 years later, I still love it. Her white beans with pasta is AWESOME. And her recipes aren't full of crud, like cream o' sludge soup. They only have a few ingredients and they're always the stuff I have on hand. Wish I could find her and tell her thanks for such a great book!

If you're looking to save money, this is a wonderful book. But do buy it used. I found my copy for 79cents at a thrift store -- so lucky me! Great money saving recipes for feeding the family on a very tight budget.

Another book to check out if you're trying to save money is FROZEN ASSETS: How to Cook for a Day and Eat for a Month. Most books on freezer/OAMC cooking these days are not really geared toward saving money. Too many expensive spices and ingredients that aren't normally on hand are required. With these two books, you won't have to worry about that. (Though, if you want to make wheat berries, you'll probably have to find it at a Health Food Store, but thankfully they are really cheap!)

Best wishes!
