Dodo Press, Book Depository Limited. While reading "Dust" by Martha Grimes, Henry James' house and works were woven into the plot line. Knowing it is considered a classic author, I thought I'd give it a go and read something by him. I have read classic lit authors and enjoyed them, Trollope, Dickens, Joyce, Maugham and others and expected this to be similar. It was very different. James' style is very verbose and his sentences and thought seem to meander. I found myself re-reading portions to see if I understood what I had just read.

In Book Two, Chapter 1, James allows Strether to set out his story, his role and function as an ambassador representing the interests of Woollett. This is not a review of Henry James's work, but of Dodo Press's deplorable description. If I want to know when, where, and under what circumstances an author was born I'll read a biography; I came to this page looking for a work of fiction. After reading Dodo Press's description, anyone unfamiliar with Henry James's work (as I confess myself to be) would come away with no notion of what the story is about, and thus whether or not it is worth reading!
