The Board Review Series (BRS) is aimed at providing basic knowledge as it relates to clinical situations and is used primarily by medical students studying for the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE). BRS Behavioral Science, Fifth Edition covers material on this subject that is addressed on USMLE Step 1, written in outline format to provide an efficient method of studying behavioral science for USMLE. The book includes at least 500 USMLE-style questions with accompanying annotated answers. An exam follows each chapter and a Comprehensive Exam is included at the end of the book.

A companion Website will offer the fully searchable text and an interactive question bank.

These questions definitely make it a BETTER OPTION than "High Yield Behavioral Science", which is also written by Dr. Fadem

These questions definitely make it a BETTER OPTION than "High Yield Behavioral Science", which is also written by Dr. Fadem. I spent some time deciding between the two (and I even own them both), and this book is far superior in terms of helping you learn how to think and answer USMLE questions properly.

by Barbara Fadem PhD (Author). I bought the boook used, but it arrive NEW! no writings or dents, better than description. And with complimentary material. If you are solid in behavioral, and the first aid is not all that you need, give it the chance to this book. Otherwise, keep with your first aid only. But i recomend it even if you are strong on topic, more info doesn hurt.

by Barbara Fadem PhD (Author). ISBN-13: 978-1496310477. It even covers a few topics that you may have learned elsewhere, and can feel free to skip (. information about neurotransmitters or psychopharmacology). However, THE BEST part about this book is that it has questions at the end of every chapter (true to the BRS format).

Title: Beh avioral scien ce, Barbara Fadem . Frequency distributions. From Fadem B. High-Yield Behavioral Science. 4th ed. Baltimore, MD: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins; 2013:126.

This is really the book of all behavioral science books. The questions inside are kind of on the lame side, as are most BRS series questions since they don't really look like the USMLE format.

ISBN 13: 9781451132106. The book covers the most current information in psychiatry in 26 chapters, but the best part is the collection of 700 USMLE-style clinical vignette questions with detailed explanations. The unique structural element is a "Typical Board Question" that begins each chapter with a clinical vignette providing an example of how the subject is tested. Each chapter ends with USMLE-style questions and answers with detailed explanations.

I'm a second year medical school who is going to take the USMLE step 1 in June. I'll edit this post once I have actually taken it, but I will still give my opinion of the book now, so take it with a grain of salt.

This book covers every high yield area of behavioral science for the boards, including health care (Medicare vs Medicare, etc), principles of medical ethics, reportability of STDs, consent from minors, and the list is endless...

It even covers a few topics that you may have learned elsewhere, and can feel free to skip (e.g. information about neurotransmitters or psychopharmacology).

However, THE BEST part about this book is that it has questions at the end of every chapter (true to the BRS format). These questions definitely make it a BETTER OPTION than "High Yield Behavioral Science", which is also written by Dr. Fadem. I spent some time deciding between the two (and I even own them both), and this book is far superior in terms of helping you learn how to think and answer USMLE questions properly.

Lastly, is it worth buying this edition? Yes. It is in accordance with the new DSM V criteria, which will be on the boards! The old edition conformed to DSM IV. Furthermore, this new edition has added at least 15 pages of new material, and has added questions.

All in all, a solid and highly recommended purchase.

EDIT: I got my USMLE score report, and I received the highest possible score in neuro and behavioral science (marked with an *, just like in NBME practice exams). My ethics score was entirely due to this book.

EDIT: I am now an M3 in my psychiatric clerkship, and I have busted out this book yet again! If you like the BRS format then I think you'll agree that this is one of the best in the series (along with BRS pathology, physiology, and pediatrics).

great review for usmle
i RECENTLY BOUGHT this book from NE Book Fulfillment. I bought the boook used, but it arrive NEW! no writings or dents, better than description. And with complimentary material.

This book is about 26 chapter. Easy to read, and to understand, even for foreing medical graduate. Is precise, only high yield. Have charts and tables. And at the end of each chapter have practice questions, and answer explanations(only explain the correct answer). Also the book include a code, that you can register on internet, and the explanations are better, and have more photos ( but this compliment is just ok, you will not miss a big deal if you buy it used without the code).
The content of the book are the following:

The biggest problem with the Kindle edition of this book is the extremely poor image quality used for the (numerous) tables. This is particulary true for some of the longer tables, where the image quality is so bad they are virtually unreadable (causing eyestrain & headache). And there is no zoom available for those tables because they're low-grade blurry images (instead of filled-in text tables).

I have really fallen in love with this book. The majority of information says to either go with this or High-Yield for Behavioral Science and I feel I made the right choice.

Although the information in both is predominantly the same (written by the same author) and would more than likely have the same effect on your board score, I enjoy this book much more.

Versus High-Yield:

I find that information is presented in a better pattern that is easier to read.
QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS. If you're like me, what you learn from doing a sample board question is much more potent that any amount of reading. At the end of each chapter is 15-20 questions that reinforce key topics in the chapter, as well as some topics that I believe to be relatively obscure. This really helps me learn and keeps me entertained.

The only drawback is not one that I have personally identified, but in the back of FA, it says the ethics chapter is short, however it has all in the information in FA 2009 ethics section and then some, so I think it should be sufficient. Anyway, in summary this is a product I would definitely recommend because I have had a lot of fun reading it and I have learned a lot.

Hope this was helpful and good luck to everyone taking the step 1.

Not sure why this book only has 4 stars. Quick, concise, with great quality practice questions. Go over this and pass your behavioral science and biostat like a boss.

Sincerely,

Read earlier edition 3 decades ago. Amazing book which has improved substantially. The best you can get in Behavioral Science.
A detailed review for every one including laymen and non-med students.
