Jack L. Because this book focuses on normal human nutrition and physiological function, it is an effective resource for students majoring in either nutrition sciences or dietetics. Intended for a course in advanced nutrition, the text presumes a sound background in the biological sciences.

When it comes to the application of these principles to human function (aka physiology) it barely registers as an introductory textbook. Was a very intricate look at the ways in which the body functions. May 27, 2008 Amanda rated it really liked it. Shelves: uni-book.

I read this book for my macro- and micronutrient metabolism courses and felt it helped tremendously. It really made all the info my professors were cramming into 45 min lectures come together for me. I also found it really helped to read it out loud and use my hands to help me visualize which way things were moving in and out of cells and whatnot. Although it is great info, it is a science text, so it's easy for your mind to wander.

Before I started doing the assigned readings, I was failing the class, but once I cracked this baby open, I was a straight-A student once again. It also helps to have your chemistry book handy. It had forgotten what some of the chemical reactions were and why they mattered. Don't hesitate to stop and look up terms to get the full grasp of what is going on.

Now that I'm in the field, I still use this book all the time. It's way too much info for the average person to remember in detail months or years later, so I review concepts in this book often. I can't imagine the 6th edition has changed very drastically so I will wait until the 7th comes out before spending the money.

I also recommend buying the hard copy b/c you can now buy the Kindle edition for $9.99 or less IF you purchased the hard text new from Amazon.

Yes Absolutely great Gets straight to the points just enough detail to get the quick info you need with things you don't already know You learn very quickly with this book without being over done with more than you can quickly digest with new topics that are new frontiers for the reader

With this book you don't need to push anyone's button or brag how big yours is It's clean man

I highly recommend this book for organic farmers and those who don't care so much about a bum cap He said he'd give you a new one

My biochem professor recommended that we get the 6th edition of this book because the information might be slightly different. The text is exactly the same, the only difference are the pictures and diagrams (and the price tag). I'd recommend this option if you don't want to break the bank.

It is a pretty comprehensive nutrition book with all the basic essentials that you need to get a good grasp on the more biochemical aspects of how nutrients interact with the body. If you haven't had a basic biochemistry class, some of this is might be a little over your head. I would recommend this for undergrad nutrition classes and graduate students who are looking for a quick reference guide.

I really liked this book for my micronutrients and macronutrients classes for my undergraduate nutrition degree. I am now taking master classes and find myself frequently using this book.

This book is for my advanced nutrition class at school. I was supposed to order the sixth edition, but to save money I ordered the fifth. It has worked just fine! I have not missed any pertinent information, the only thing is that the page numbers are off from the sixth edition. It was a great rental!

Used this book for a college class. Its a good overview, but doesn't get immensely detailed. Which is good for an "overview" course.
Great overview of the biochemistry, cell biology and endocrinology of nutrition. Very detailed!
