Most of us don’t know the first thing about the machines we’re licensed to drive – and this can turn a ticket to freedom into a ticket to trouble. If you’re like most people, you probably tend to drive around until something goes wrong with the car. You then incur the expense of replacing worn and burnt-out parts (or the entire engine) when low-cost, regular maintenance could have kept your wheels turning for a long time.

Auto Repair For Dummies is indispensable for anyone who is tired of nodding and smiling at the incomprehensible mutterings of your mechanic, only to end up shelling out money for repairs that you neither fully understand nor always need. This easy-to-understand guide is also for you if you

Don't have the vaguest idea of how a car works. Can't identify anything you see under the hood of your vehicle. Are tired of other people assuming (especially if you’re a teenager or a woman) that you aren’t capable of handling repairs yourself. Don't want to feel helpless in an emergency. Are tired of being ripped off because of your own ignorance.

This book shows you how your car works; what it needs in the way of tender loving care; and how to keep from being overcharged if you need to entrust repairs to someone else. Auto Repair For Dummies also gives you the scoop on these topics and more:

What makes your vehicle go (and how and why) A program of "preventive medicine" to avoid trouble Shopping for tools and knowing how to use them Diesel engines and alternatively powered cars How to keep your car looking its best Dealing with on-road emergencies Checking your tires, alignment, and steering

By handling the simple maintenance and tune-ups and being able to diagnose trouble and perform the less complex repairs yourself, you’ll save some serious money. Once you break the ice (or crack open the hood), the heady sense of power will carry you through basic car repair and maintenance with confidence and ease.

Didn't even get my license until I was 26. So I'm trying to learn, finally. I got this and one other book out of the library. Of the two, I liked this one better. I don't know diddly squat about cars but always wanted to learn. I had no one to teach me, so what am I to do? I saw this book and read the reviews and I had to have it. Not even a dozen pages in and you're already running to your car checking under the hood! It tells you exactly how to do everything, from the most basic to the slightly more advanced. So even a dummy (lol) can do it. This book should be given to everyone when they purchase their first car. It'll save you a ton of money and hassle! The first day I was reading I found out my oil was low and that I had possibly the world's dirtiest cabin air filter. Not anymore!

Decided I needed to learn a bit more about cars after my friend's car died on the road. They opened the hood and we both stood there looking at the inside like "Um . . . what?" Figured it be good to do some reading up on cars, especially since I'm buying one soon. Book is really informative with in depth detail. Makes the interior of a car seem a little less scary and a lot more manageable.

I was so impressed with this Dummies guide that it is now stored in my older vehicle for instant reference in preparation for if/when the next mechanical issue/breakdown occurs.
It paid for itself with the great tip about purchasing gas early in the morning before it expands with the natural heat of the day; more for your money when it's cooler.
Every woman should carry this in her car along with the emergency tool kit.

This is actually the second time that I bought this book because I lost my first copy. I've never been much of a fan of the "For Dummies" series, but this book is an exception. Although it will not make you a Master mechanic, it will supply you with enough information so that you at least can navigate yourself throughout the Auto World and make sure that you don't get screwed by other people. It covers a lot of things: how to give the car basic service needs, how the engine and drivetrain work, and even some tips on how to buy a car properly. Definitely worth the price and at least a one-time read.

This book teaches you not only about the motor, but also you can learn how to fix diesel and electrics. It also explains what tools you really need,So don't need to spend $500 for mechanic set. And Last it teaches tips, pros, cons and warning for your car.

The first few chapters alone are worth a few bucks... thinking specifically of the chapter about monthly maintenance made easy, checking your fluids and other basic wear and tear. Will you save you a fortune in the long run, plus it's just nice to know those sorts of things.

This book had saved me so much money and time. I highly recommend anyone read it before even popping the hood open on their car. It is well written, and contains important information that is impossible to find in online DIY articles in terms of auto stuff. It mentions so many important things that you would not think about other wise when repairing your vehicle yourself. Great book; added way more value to my life than it cost.
This is not an all inclusive book though, and only covers things that most people could do pretty easily by themselves. For example, it doesn't cover how to drain your auto transmission fluid, probably because that can get a little bit dangerous for DIY'ers
Pretty good read, very light on information. I feel like I was not the targeted audience for this book, or I know more that I thought I did. It was well written but lack substance overall.
