Principles of Environmental Chemistry offers a student-friendly approach to the chemical principles underlying environmental issues, and links socio-economic indicators with their impacts on the environment. Written for students who have taken general chemistry, the text presents the major environmental issues in the areas of energy; toxic chemicals; and the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. The only environmental textbook that stresses analysis of environmental pollutants, Principles of Environmental Chemistry describes the analytical techniques and methods that are used to measure pollutants in the environment, stresses EPA regulation of discharges into the air and water, and describes the EPA methods that are used to assure compliance.

The book covers many topics associated with environmental chemistry, however it is printed in black and white which makes some of the pictures and figures appear bland, and the print is a little small. or maybe not dark enough. While most of the information is accurate, there is some room for improvement however (. some chemical equations are not balanced correctly, section on photochemical smog fails to mention that VOC emissions also contribute to the formation of ground level ozone).

Principles of Environmental Chemistry is an in-depth and easy to follow textbook.

I recently completed an undergraduate course which used this book as the only major text, and I found it more than sufficent. It does an excellent job of providing real world applications of chemical knowledge to address the major environmental concerns of our time. It should also be noted that while I came from a strong chemistry background, some of the students in the course did not.

It is not meant for someone who has had little general chemistry as the description implies. I have a B.S. so I've had plenty of chemistry; however, because of that I don't see how someone who's had little would easily understand many of the concepts in this book. Also, many of the figures, graphs and such are misleading, i.e. size discrepancies that make concentrations appear opposite of what they are. There are also mistakes as well, so perhaps the next edition will be better.

Needed to brush up on environmental chem info for a work related test but didn't wanna pay the new book price fee this was perfect for that

Well written. Great information & easy to understand.

I disagree with the previous reviewers that this book is for intermediate and advanced chemistry use. It is very basic and doesn't deal too heavily in chemistry at all. Anyone with a basic high school or college chemistry course could easily understand the text. I had assumed more chemistry was in the book and consider the title to be misleading. If you understand chemistry, don't make the mistake I did. Save your money and buy a different book.

This is a good book, as far as text books go, but I don't like that there is no answer manual or online content. It makes it difficult to check my answers or study for tests.

This text book was very reasonably priced and used but when it came to my house it looked new and had no writing or highlighting in it. It also came very quickly.

While my knowledge certainly gave me an advantage, it was in no means necessary for understanding the text. Despite the vast coverage of chemical issues in the environment, the book is user friendly to those coming from biological or even social science backgrounds. It also offers quick reviews of organic chemistry and the like, but wisely puts such things in the appendix opposed to bogging down the chapters.

I would highly recommend this textbook for any course or person seeking to explore environmental issues from a chemical perspective. It is valuable for chemistry majors and minors, but still accessible to those in other fields.
