BRIAN D. JOSEPH is Distinguished University Professor of Linguistics and The Kenneth E. Naylor Professor of South Slavic Linguistics at The Ohio State Univer-sity, where he has taught since 1979. He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1978, writing his dissertation on syntactic change between Medieval and Modern Greek.
