When the author, a young prospector, is adopted by 3 motherless bear cubs, he tries to prepare them for independent life

A wonderful yarn of a man raising three bear cubs in the wilderness of British Columbia. A wonderful reflection on raising wildlife. No matter how many books on bears I read, I always marvel at the depth of friendliness and affection black bears can develop.

A wonderful yarn of a man raising three bear cubs in the wilderness of British Columbia. Obviously, it takes a skilled person to do this without getting hurt, but bears make irresistibly entertaining characters and they're so much fun to read about.

His narration took me directly into the North Woods. I watched the three cubs become his family; I watched them grow up; I watched them through fun and hard times.

book by Robert Franklin Leslie. His narration took me directly into the North Woods. And, once I was there, there was no lack of a story to keep me moving along. The forest was rich with detail and poignant occasions. I am staunchly against crying, but at the end I seriously thought about considering it, and that's not something that is easy to make me do. All in all, I have to say that you really need to get your hands on this book. The Bears and I film version.

I first read this as a library book many years ago. A few years later I went to borrow it again and it had been removed and most likely sold. I then spent several months looking for a used copy which I finally found.

In short, this is the story of a young man in the early 1930s who wanted to make a bit of money for college by trapping on Vancouver Island. Instead he adopts three orphaned bear cubs and for the next three years acts as a surrogate mother to them. The ending is a bit sad but quite realistic.

I strongly recommend this book to any and all animal lovers.

This is one of those rare books I come back to in my mind. I consider it one of the most beautiful reads in my life. I fell in love with these cubs and suffered the heartbreaks that come with loving something. Leslie is a wonderful writer able to bring his experience to life for me. His loves became my loves and his heartbreaks became mine as well. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Well written and engaging true tale of a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the wilderness of British Columbia with orphaned bear cubs. Lots of interesting characters who weave in and out of the author's life, and the development of the bears' personalities in a magical though harsh world make this a tough book to put down.

This book is a treasure, rediscovered after first reading it 40 years ago. The author's descriptions and sensitive story-telling are absolutely spell-bindiing.
I recommend it to readers who are too young to have experienced it when it was first written. Thank you for helping introduce it to new generations.
