Additives are substances which are added to a coating composition in small amounts (commonly less than one percent) to modify properties of a liquid paint or a solid coating obtained thereof in a desired direction. For example, one property of a liquid paint is the applicability which can be influenced by rheological additives (e.g. sag control agents). One property of solid coatings are their corrosion protective properties which can be influenced by corrosion protection additives or adhesion promotors, for example. Additives act like “medicines for paints and may show unwanted side effects.
The present book is in the first place a textbook and is originated from lectures of author at the Universtity of Applied Sciences in Esslingen/Germany. Its objective is a chemical and application-technological description of diffent types of additives for paints; test methods are beyond the limits of this book. Because of the plentitude of the very different additives the book must be restricted to the most important types; but these types should be explained in detail. Furthermore, the types of damages which are prevented by the additives should be demonstrated by photographs/pictures because as generally known “one picture says more than thousand words. In particular cases coating formulations (starting formulations of raw matertial suppliers) are presented to explain the specific use of additives; so, attention is turned beyond additives in their strict sense.
The present textbook seeks to familarize laboratory assistants, technicians, bachelors, engineers or chemists with this class of raw materials for paints. It presupposes a basic knowledge of chemistry. Moreover, it will serve as a reference work for all readers interested in raw materials, paints and coatings.Provides descriptions of diffent types of additives for paints from a chemical and application technology perspectiveDemonstrates with photographes types of damages which are prevented by additivesServes as textbook as well as reference work for professionals

Additives for Waterbornes. European Coatings Tech Files. Understanding Additives. By (author) Wernfried Heilein. Waterborne coatings system are a growing market segment especially in the US. This green technolgogy allows the production of environmentally friendly products which reduce pollution both in their manufacture and in the location where they are used (due to minimal fumes). The use of waterbornes can reduce costs involved in removing noxious gases from the working environment and protecting staff from their effect.

Further expansion of Bodo Möller Chemie Group Paint additives are a strategic component of Bodo Möller Chemie’s product range. The founding of Bodo Möller Chemie UK has enabled the Group to expand its distribution of this product group to include the UK and Ireland. The existing portfolio for coatings applications in Scandinavia and the Benelux countries has also been expanded with the addition of new products. By analogy, additives are the flavors and spices of a coating. Hopefully you have a better understanding of the complexity and power of additives. Modern coatings are complex formulas with thickeners, emulsifiers, dispersants, pigments, defoamers, leveling agents, photo-stabilizers, curing catalysts and other additives. These additives enhance the inherent properties of the resin. In my career, the most common philosophical question I have heard is ‘why can’t we design one additive to do it all’?
COATINGS FORMULATION. Paints and coatings as high-tech products. Additives are substances added in small proportions to coating compositions to modify or improve properties of the liquid paint (.
COATINGS FORMULATION. As already mentioned in chapter ., paints often have a negative image because of solvent emissions. Measures that lower levels of solvent emissions, such as the introduction of water-borne paints and powder coatings (Figure I-. ), are not reported in the mass media. rheology) or of the solid coating (. The following helpful abbreviations for describing the binders of coatings will be used in this book (Table I-. ).
