About half the stories are set entirely in fantasy lands and half set in an almost recognizable here and now (or there and then in some cases), so I've alternated the settings more or less with each story.

He has a special interest in fiction magazines and has written a multi-volume History of the Science Fiction Magazine and a study of British fiction magazines, The Age of the Storytellers

Mike Ashley continues to be one of the best (and most prolific) anthologists in this and a remarkable number of other fields. He has anthologized fantasies, both comic and not, in multiple volumes, detective fiction old and new, historical, new and international erotica, Westerns, Third Reich-at-war tales, Man-o-War sea stories, and a dozen other genres, apparently without growing stale.

This collection he again pulls off without a single bad piece of writing, although not every story will be to everyone's taste. His brief introductions are consistently good, too-- the man must do a lot of research, to cover such a wide range of topics.

When I received this book ("Seriously Comic Fantasy"), I thought the stories looked familiar. They are. The contents are IDENTICAL with my copy of "Mammoth Book of Comic Fantasy II". The difference is that CFII was published by Carroll & Graf in NY, while Seriously Comic Fantasy was published two years later by Constable Publishers in London with the same cover but different title.

If you already have CFII, be warned!!!
