Product Part Number: FW003. Package Contents: -1 x Rulebook (Hardback) 308 Pages, -1 x Forces (Softback) 100 Pages -1 x, Hobby (Softback) 40 Pages. Flames of War is a great game and a lot of fun to play and the rule book is obviously required for anyone interested in getting into the game, but the product is not without its flaws. I don't have enough games under my belt to offer an opinion about any flaws in the rules (plus, I've won most of those games, so I won't complain), but what really bothered me about this "boxed set" of 3 books was that one of them completely fell apart.

One of the small paperback books, the one with the generic army lists in it, is very cheaply bound and fell apart practically by itself. Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem, as Battlefront's forum is filled with people complaining about it. On the bright side, you probably won't ever build an army from that book's lists, so it was more of an annoyance/disappointment than a reason for me to never recommend this to someone. Just something to keep in mind.

Flames of War

Version 3 - this is the newest verion of the rules

Having been a wargamer now for over 25 years the table top game Flames of War has taken me by surprise and outclasses all other games in the field. Of course it helps that I am also an armchair general with great interest in military history. The better you know the history the more fun the game is and the better you know the game the more sense military history becomes. For newcomers this book is not a complete game in itself, the game is played with minatures and you will need the core rulebook Flames of War - but if minature wargaming is your thing - then this is the best game I have played.

The clever designers have split the conflict into 3 distinct periods, Early War 1939-1941 (EW), Mid War 1942-1943 (MW) and Late War 1944-1945 (LW). This is necessary since weapons development was very fast during the war and an EW force is no match for a MW force which again cannot compete with the LW forces. Along with the core rules you will need some army books later on and they often provide valuable insight into the organisation of contemporary armies and each of the nationalities has sub rules to reflect that countries style of fighting.

The book is a massive 400 pages and yet the core rules are surprisingly simple and the community is well supported. In addtion you get a small book covering basic forces for the LW period and a hobby book the help you along in the modeling aspect.

Once I started playing this I eventually sold of all my other minature games. The game is very tactical even if it includes dice and often gives historical results with the minimum of rules needed and this also means that gameplay is fast (once you have got the hang of it) and a lot of fun. Visually it is very pleasing and it has a large supporting community. If you are also interested in the history of World War II then it is very well supported, with all the major players but armies for Italy, Hungary, Romania and Finland as well. If miniature wargaming is your thing I cannot recommend it enough.

I just started playing this game, and this book certainly is useful.. but, over $150?? Really?? You know, you can buy it from your local game shop for it's normal price of $60. Really, this book is in no way limited.. you can even guy it from the publishers web site for $60. Just saying, don't get ripped off here.
The book was falling apart
