Five-Twelfths of Heaven book. Melissa Scott builds an interesting world, with a repressive interstellar government called the Hegemony and a legend of lost Earth. Women must have male guardians to represent them in legal matters, generally aren't allowed to be pilots or magi, and are forced to cover their faces with veils. The first book is in danger of falling into the Exceptional Girl trope, since Silence is nearly the only female character of any note.

I read Five Twelfths of Heaven (and the other Roads of Heaven books) as they were published. It is impossible to convey to today's readers how unique refreshing these books were at the time. Melissa Scott is a great writer, and I can recommend anything she writes. Compare her books with her contemporaries and you'll be amazed how well her books hold up in comparison. Silence is a unique individual. Download (pdf, 593 Kb) Donate Read. Epub FB2 mobi txt RTF. Converted file can differ from the original. If possible, download the file in its original format.

Melissa Scott has played with a lot of conventional genres and SF story elements, but her best work pushes some of the boundaries. In Five-Twelfths of Heaven, she creates an unusual - and successful - cross between fantasy and science fiction, as well as continuing her tradition of dealing with gender roles and society. The universe of Five-Twelfths is a fairly standard one in some ways.

Out of Scott’s oeuvre, I chose Five-Twelfths of Heaven to start with, for multiple reasons. First, it is one of the rare works of classic queer SFF that are not standalone books-it’s the first volume of a trilogy titled The Roads of Heaven. In Five-Twelfths of Heaven, space travel is a process based on Western alchemical concepts. Baen Books : Distributed by Simon & Schuster. inlibrary; printdisabled; ; china.
