Savage Rule - Don Pendleton. Mack Bolan, the soldier still known to a very few as the Executioner, crouched low and was perfectly still. His senses, attuned to the sounds of the jungle through long experience, picked out the telltale sounds of men and equipment some distance off. Some barely conscious part of his mind easily separated these from the ambient, natural noises of the beautiful-and deadly-terrain surrounding him.

Mack Bolan was twenty minutes into his jog on one of the gymnasium treadmills facing a floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the eastern perimeter of Stony Man Farm. Through the window he could see the bare-limbed, regimentally planted poplars surrounding the distant Annex as well as the tip of that building’s storage silo, which outsiders were led to believe contained nothing but wood chips ground up as a byproduct of the Farm’s timber-harvesting venture.

Talk about Savage Rule (Mack Bolan)

Dandr
I'd file this one under "guilty pleasures." The action is definitely there.

Even though the author says, within the text, that Bolan isn't a super-soldier, the rest of the novel portrays him as exactly that. He informs the reader that going into a fight against 40-to-1 odds is suicidal (I agree, BTW) after Bolan has already prevailed in a couple engagements against at least 200-1 odds. Johnny Rambo and Bruce Lee combined got nothin' on the Mack in this novel!

The prose was a bit cliche`d and grandiose. The detours into soapboxing explanations of why Bolan did what he did were really unnecessary--the characters were so black and white that no justification of what he did, and how he did it, were warranted.

I applaud the author's choice of bad guys in this installment. It's un-PC and just about unheard-of these days for a writer in any genre to take a swing at any form of villainy outside the parameters approved by the New York Publishing Cartel.

I really wanted to give this book 4 stars or more, but just couldn't for the above-noted reasons. But I tend to be picky. If you are a Bolan fan, you will probably enjoy this book despite everything.
