I like western stories. This story about an Apache war chief and his relationships with his father and other Apaches was very insightful to me. Also the integrity that was shown to his enemies and the respected friendship he had with the ranch girl. Well written and interesting.

I have offend wounded where Burroughs have gotten his informations on Apache until I read of his experience in Arizonia. My great great grandfather was a Apache Indian born a son of an Apache War Chief. Naturally, hearing stories from my grandfather of his great grandfather I find the Apache life style very interesting, and had many dreams of seeing and riding with Geronimo. I love this book!

In this sequel to The War Chief, Burroughs avoids stereotypes in a fast-paced story set in the American Southwest during Geronimo's last years before he surrendered and was imprisoned. Apaches, Anglos, and Mexicans interact in this story. There are good guys on all sides, and the bad guys are all white. This is not a simple-minded Western, but more a historical novel that respects Geronimo and his way of life.

Published in 1933, Burroughs tells the story of Shoz-Dijiji, the Black Bear, who cannot fully explain his attraction to Wichita Billings. When the Black Bear takes the warpath their mutual attraction complicates their lives. The book is a good fact-based yarn that deserves broader respect and reading.

I would consider this a classic in the era of the
untamed Apache Indian.

I found it a quick read because it did not waste
paragraphs describing the grass is green and the sky is blue.

I liked it and I recommend the book.

The Edgar Rice Burroughs story, Apache Devil, was Chapter 5 of 6 chapters. However, included in the magazine were at least a dozen other short stories written by known writers. I enjoyed the surprise.
