Before Adam is a novel by Jack London, serialized in 1906 and 1907 in Everybody's Magazine. The story offers an early view of human evolution. The majority of the story is told through the eyes of the man's hominid alter ego, one of the Cave People. In addition to the Cave People, there are the more advanced Fire People, and the more animal-like Tree People.

These are our ancestors, and their history is our history. I, who had seentrees only in parks and illustrated books, wandered in my sleep throughinterminable forests. And further, these dream trees were not a mereblur on my vision. They were sharp and distinct.

Before Adam may not be as attractive a story as other Jack London fare. The content reads even I happened on this one during a browse session at my local used book dealer. Since I remember loving Call of the Wild, this seemed a no-brainer to try. Furthermore, thanks to the first section of Arthur C. Clarke's 2001, I was also anxious to see another fictional take on prehistoric humans. Both as a Jack London outing, and another dip into literature about prehistoric times, this book paid off. The story of the novel Before Adam is told through the eyes of a man of the early twentieth century who suffers from a split personality syndrome: every night he sees bright dreams, in which he is a distant ancestor of a man who lived hundreds of thousands of years ago. After seeing these dreams, the main character tries to reconstruct the life of his alter ego. Jack London, pseudonym of John Griffith Chaney, American novelist and short-story writer whose best-known works-among them The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906)-depict elemental struggles for survival. During the 20th century he was one of the most extensively translated of American authors.
