The Merciless Ladies. Winston Mawdsley Graham OBE was an English novelist, best known for the series of historical novels about the Poldarks.

The Merciless Ladies. Graham was born in Manchester in 1908, but moved to Perranporth, Cornwall when he was seventeen. His first novel, The House with the Stained Glass Windows was published in 1933. His first ‘Poldark’ novel, Ross Poldark, was published in 1945, and was followed by eleven further titles, the last of which, Bella Poldark, came out in 2002.

Winston Graham was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL) and in 1983 was invested Winston Graham was the author of forty novels. His books have been widely translated and the Poldark series has been developed into two television series, shown in 22 countries.

Winston Mawdsley Graham OBE, born Winston Grime (30 June 1908 – 10 July 2003), was an English novelist best known for the Poldark series of historical novels set in Cornwall, though he also wrote numerous other works, including thrillers, historical novels, short stories, non-fiction and plays. Winston Graham was the author's pseudonym until he changed his name by deed.
