A model-turned-maid is taken hostage by a "corpse" that comes to life while she is cleaning the funeral home--a man she calls Frankenstein

Karen Robards masterfully creates a unique and memorable romantic suspense novel. Tonight Summer had followed standard procedure, though she’d been sorely tempted not to. Beyond the hall in which she stood the building was as dark and quiet as a vast, echoing cave.

Karen Robards masterfully creates a unique and memorable romantic suspense novel. The story is imbued with the perfect combination of humor and supernatural happenings. The silence was broken only by the low hum of the air-conditioning. Knowing Harmon Brothers’ penchant for cutting costs, she was vaguely surprised that the unit was kept running overnight.

Summer recognized her own Daisy Fresh uniform with relief. The clothes might be less than fresh, but at least they were clothes. She wouldn’t have to sleep naked after al. Without underclothes, her bare bottom clung to the polyester pants, and her breasts hung unconfined beneath the thin nylon of the blouse. Glancing down, Summer saw that her nipples thrust visibly against the cloth. She pulled the quilt back around herself, and felt better.

Series: G K Hall Large Print Book Series. Proof is one of these second types of books. I can fall asleep at night after reading a page and a half, where with the earlier books, I would be awake until four in the morning unable to put the book down. I can't say it's a poorly written book, because it reads like any number of other authors I could name. But if you are looking for the classic Dick Francis page turning, spare prose, racing world driven book, pass this one by.

Walking After Midnight. The nude male body lay on the embalming table, battered beyond recognition. In the prolific Robards's latest romantic tall tale (after Hunter's Moon), what Lynn doesn't count on, besides the bruising reality of actually riding horses, is finding love and stumbling on a plot to blow up the world. When Lynn meets hunky outfitter Jess, both immediately feel a strong antipathy that teeters perilously close to attraction.

The relationship between Steve and Summer was so cool.

Talk about Walking After Midnight (G K HALL LARGE PRINT BOOK)

I enjoyed reading this book very much. I liked the plot and the characters. I highly recommend reading this book.
Summer McAfee a former lingerie model. At twenty-four her career was ended. She was too old to model lingerie. The agency was looking for younger girls. She went back home married a doctor after five years they were divorced. Summer started up a cleaning service Daisy Fresh Janitorial Service.

Harmon Brothers a funeral home is Summer cleaning service’s biggest clinic. Two employees worked the night shift called in sick at the last minute. While Summer was cleaning she was hearing all kinds of noise. She went into the embalming room where the noise came from. There was a naked man facing up he had a sheet on his body. Summer was in the embalming room cleaning earlier and he was covered. He moved his leg and then Summer went over to the table to see if he was alive. His hand tightened around her wrist and wanted to know how many are out there. Steve dragged Summer outside to the parking lot where a van was parked a thug was standing guard near the van. Steve took his cloths and the van. Steve Calhoun was a detective with the Tennessee State Police before he was fired. He was working on a case involved Murfreesboro police department on corruption and drug laundering. He knew that Harmon Brothers was the key to getting money and drugs in and out of the country without questions.

Steve couldn’t see both eyes were half closed from the two black eyes. The thugs had beaten him threw kerosene on him and about to cremate when he got away. Summer left her cleaning material and her purse with her car keys at the funeral home. The thugs and the crooked police are aware of Summer identity where she lived. Steve and Summer are on the run being chase by the crooked Police. Steve doesn’t know who to trust.

The story line moved pretty fast with many twist and turns. The ending was a cliffhanger. Muffy the dog was hilarious. The dog played a cute role with the crooked police. Muffy sneaked off smelled food while the boy scouts was cooking hotdogs. She stole a bag of hotdogs and buns then took off. Karen Robards did a superb job tying all the loose ends.
I am not a big fan of paranormal elements in books. I had no idea that Steve's ex-fling would be making ghostly visits throughout this book. After reading the first chapter, which is all Deedee (the ghost)I then went back and reread the product description. In Amazon's product description there is no mention of a ghost.

Product description; "The nude male body lay on the embalming table, battered beyond recognition. Gingerly, Summer McAfee, chairman, CEO, and sole employee of Daisy Fresh cleaning service, reached out to touch an arm to reassure herself that she hadn't just seen the corpse move. Suddenly, shockingly, her hand was in the viselike grip of a man very much alive and desperate enough to take her captive on a no-holds-barred run from cops, killers, and his own decidedly complicated past... Summer's former life as a New York lingerie model had gone south with her marriage, leaving her, at thirty-six, single and back home in Tennessee, on her hands and knees scrubbing other people's bathrooms. But the drab present vanishes in a flash as she's forced to flee into the Tennessee wilds with the stranger she calls Frankenstein, first as his captive, then his companion, as they run from the enemies determined to destroy them both--straight into a raging passion that could only be the last laugh of fate..."

The story was very fast paced but a bit far fetched. The bad guys always seemed to catch up to Summer and Steve. Two of Summer's employees are murdered in her own home, Steve and Summer are captured but then narrowly escape yet Summer takes the time to grab the dog and take it with them on their trek as they continuously try to escape the killers. The story had some humor, some eye rolling moments and lots of action.
This is my all time favorite novel. I laughed, I cried, I jumped, I even dropped the book once because the story is so good!!! Love everything about this book.
I've enjoyed this book for a long time
Good read
So I am a fan of Karen Robards...Love, love, love her....but this book reminds me of a book she wrote before this one. Could that book be "Night Magic"???? Before I say anything else I just want to state that I really liked this book but I gave it 3 stars because I already read the first version of it which was "Night Magic". Now, not to confuse anyone, there is no other version but it is practically the same book with different character names and instead of the "fluffy little thing" the male character doesn't like being a cat--it's a dog this time.

Some of you hated the repetition of the song "Ghostbusters" but I acually found it quite funny and the "franklinstein" thing I completely over saw seeing as how I did enjoy reading it. The ghost thing I found a little out of its element but I dealt with it because it was not in every chapter. As I read on, I grew weary because I was pratically guessing correctly what was going to happen at the end of the chapter before I even read it. And I also read that a couple of you thought the book "Wild Orchids" had the same plot as this one so it must have the same plot as "Night Magic" as well...

I liked the book but I never thought that there would be three books in a row following the same story line. Like I said I enjoyed the book because it did make me laugh but I didn't receive anything special that makes a book unique to me.

I am just glad that these are some of her earlier works and that she has grown from them.
This is a nice CD but does not contain very many popular songs. Still, not bad for the money.
