A political thriller set in Italy. For the moment the country walks a slippery, unfamiliar tightrope called democracy

A political thriller set in Italy. Good knowledge of the italian mentality. com User, July 14, 1998. In this book the autor points out with love to the detail the italian mentality and differences between the powerful and the servers, the north and the south, the one who know and the those who execute commands. At a certain point the story itself starts to lack in credibility but the author never goes beyond.

Morris West invents stories as though the world were running out of them, and The Salamander is a strong on.

Morris West invents stories as though the world were running out of them, and The Salamander is a strong one. It can't compete for morality ribbons with such West best sellers as The Devil's Advocate or The Shoes Of the Fisherman, but it's a zippy militarypolitical thriller that drives away boredom while romancing power as if it were as sweet as a vestal virgin. You will find my name on the Salamander dossier: Dante Alighieri Matucci, Colonel of the Carabinieri, seconded for special duty to the Service of Defenselnformation. Matucci narrates the novel as though trained for the task, perhaps in preparation for advancement to a role in the movie.

West puts the reader in place - an uncomfortable place. West provides an amazing array of insightful details and essentially challenges readers to make their own moral judgments about the very complex characters and their moral rationalizations for their equally complex decisions. The reader may get angry, upset but unable to put the book down. Anyone pretending to know or fully understand the origins of the Israel - Palestine conundrum may be taken aback and even learn something they will never read, see or hear in the modern media. Again, Morris West's works are not for the weak of heart or lazy mind. For the reader who perseveres the rewards are rich and many.

Not often do we can across written works that help us understand the mentality and way of life of a people while churning out a beautiful story about individuals and the way their society work. So I appreciate Morris West's "The Salamander" for its insight into Italy and Italians. It is like "Disciples of Fortune" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". Also, it is well-written, it flows smoothly and the characters come out real.

Great Book!

Morris West's powerful novel is set in the tangle of Italian politics. Italy is a democracy that walks the tightrope between the extremists of the right and the left. Colonel Dante Matucci, of the Intelligence, fears the topple into totalitarian rule, as does the Salamander - the wealthy industrialist, Bruno Manzini.

The Salamander is the legendary beast that lives in fire - the symbol of survival. And Matucci has to decide how much to pay for his survival in face of a threatened coup; his life, his soul, his love for Lili Anders, one-time spy and now his mistress.

This is a novel of the intrigue, the violence, the passion that is Italy; the decisions are those that face us all at one time or another.

Read the complete book before you judge it. It will surprise you by the end. ENJOY!

I can't say anything of this book, or almost anything, in the first 20 pages you know who is the bad guy and the book keeps rounding and rounding 400 more pages until they finally discover him, I really don't recommend reading this book.
