Julie Myerson is fascinated by Jeremy Gavron's An Acre of Barren Ground, a fictionalised history of Brick Lane. Last year I published a book that was the true story of everyone who'd ever lived here in our home in Clapham.

Julie Myerson is fascinated by Jeremy Gavron's An Acre of Barren Ground, a fictionalised history of Brick Lane. Though at the time I was proud that I'd managed to delve back in time as far as 1872 (when the house was built), it was only as the project evolved that it dawned on me what a meagre drop in the ocean that really was. What about all the centuries before? What about prehistory?

Jeremy Gavron's bold and brilliant new novel invites you on a remarkable walking tour - a tour during which the ghosts of London's Brick Lane open up their front doors. Each house has a story to tell.

Jeremy Gavron's bold and brilliant new novel invites you on a remarkable walking tour - a tour during which the ghosts of London's Brick Lane open up their front doors. At number 30, in the autumn of 1888, a man is arrested with a packet of entrails in his pocket and Inspector Abberline wonders if he has caught the Whitechapel murderer. This rather odd book is a kind of history of the Brick Lane area in East London, or it could be a novel. It is a collection of incidents, imaginative and factual, that have occurred there, at whatever period in history.

Jeremy Gavron is the author of six books, including the novels The Book of Israel, winner of the Encore Award, and An Acre of Barren Ground; and A Woman on the Edge of Time, a memoir about his mother’s suicide

What an extraordinary book. Some of Gavron’s tales are Sakiesque, only more macabre. A 17th-century lass appears, who not only has a hungry hog to contend with, but is also with child by her father

What an extraordinary book. It reminds me of a magnificently woven carpet whose eclectic style combines oriental, East- ern European and Hebraic adornments. Threads are abruptly snipped and left dangling. Curry and blood-stains are spattered upon it, causing confusion and alarm. Gavron’s work defies categorisation. It is not a collection of short stories. A 17th-century lass appears, who not only has a hungry hog to contend with, but is also with child by her father. When the baby is born, the father instantly removes it, telling his daughter it has died. The next day the girl seeks the burial ground
