Sir Peter Levin Shaffer CBE (/ˈʃæfər/; 15 May 1926 – 6 June 2016), was an English playwright and screenwriter. He wrote numerous award-winning plays, of which several were adapted into films. Shaffer was born to a Jewish family in Liverpool, the son. Shaffer was born to a Jewish family in Liverpool, the son of Reka (née Fredman) and Jack Shaffer, an estate agent. He was the identical twin brother of fellow playwright Anthony Shaffer.

Amadeus by Peter Shaffer combines fiction and history to detail the final years of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The play also focuses on Antonio Salieri, an older composer who, propelled by jealousy, plots the tragic downfall of his rival, Mozart. Probably not. Despite the rumors, most historians are content with the more realistic notion that Mozart died of rheumatic fever. However, the storyline is nothing new.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a genius, the most brilliant musician the world will ever see. But the court of eighteenth-century Vienna doesn't recognize his talents - only Antonio Salieri, the Court Composer, does, and he is tortured by what he hears. Seething with rage at the genius of this flippant buffoon and suddenly aware of his own mediocrity, Salieri declares war and sets out to destroy the man he sees as God's instrument on earth. Peter Shaffer's award-winning play is a rich, exuberant portrayal of a God-like man among mortals, and lives destroyed by envy

I'd seen the movie... but had to read the play for a class. Wonderful. The dialog so lyrical in some places... fitting well with the whole musical theme. There's a terrific intro by the playwright, which discusses changes that were made.

This work surmises the genius of Mozart in the most entertaining way.

Amadeus is one of the greatest plays ever written, so it's too bad that the publishers decided to print it on rough tissue paper with a cover on par with $4 bargain books. Shame on you Harper Perennial.
Kison
A well bound and quickly shipped stage version of the movie. My wife is directing it this fall and needed it to begin putting her show together.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this, but at the back of the book, there is the score for the transformation of Salieri's welcome march to Mozart's "Non Piu Andrai". It's a delightful little supplement.

An absolutely wonderful script. So we'll written. I love the characters and how artfully they are developed. It was delivered VERY quickly and in terrific shape. Very, very pleased.
Thrilling!
