I don't think I read the same book as the other reviewers. At least, from my perspective, the book with the glowing reviews was not the one that is on my Kindle. Now don't get me wrong - Jaci Burton can write an amazing book! This just isn't it. Her Play-by-Play series is very entertaining and I've been enjoying her Hope books, so the combination of those made me want to read her backlist. She is a talented author and can weave a compelling story. That being said…

I hated these characters. I read it from start to finish and couldn't wait for it to be over. Shannon is supposed to be a strong alpha female type of character, but she comes off as a bitter shrew who is a control freak. She didn't have one redeeming quality, except maybe her looks, and beauty is very much only skin deep with this woman. There is nothing attractive about her personality - not even the smallest thing. The slightest criticism from Max about her work (in which he said that she was doing a good job but needed to think bigger) and she is belligerent and refuses to accept that her work is anything less than perfect - complete with calling him names. This, coupled with the fact that they are in a business setting with the rest of her family sitting around, he's a very important client, and this is their first meeting just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Right off the bat, I'm thinking: Shrew.

But Shannon isn't the only problem I saw here - Max is definitely part of the problem. He's supposed to be a dominant wolf with alpha qualities - all I saw was a whipping boy. Sure, he does like to spout directions instead of questions (for example, telling Shannon after they'd slept together a grand total of two times, that she would be moving in with him), but for the most part, he sucks up every snide comment and hateful action that Shannon directs his way and comes back for more. Honestly, I never felt these two had any romantic chemistry, whatsoever. And that was before the big reveal happens **SPOILERS COMING UP - Don't read the end of this paragraph if you don't want to know!!** where Max, after saving Shannon's life, admits that he is a werewolf and Shannon tells him not once but twice that she is disgusted by him and can't believe she slept with him, before storming out of the house and leaving him. So what does he do? Hides out for a while and then - LITERALLY! - goes crawling back to her, begging for her to give him another chance. I wasn't a big fan of Max as a hero, but even I - at that point - was practically yelling at the book that he could do so much better! "Wash your hands of this witch!"

I was so glad when I reached the end. It was almost painful to slog through watching these two try and get together when there is no romance at all, no building of a relationship, no hint that they could actually make a life together beyond the one scene where they actually got along.

It bears repeating - I HATE giving such a low star to Jaci Burton's books, but I'm the type of reader who enjoys reading both the 5-star and the 1-star reviews to get a well-rounded picture of whether I would want to purchase a book. This one seemed to have glowing reviews and it's Jaci Burton, so it was a no-brainer for me. So if you think your reading tastes are similar to mine and you want to avoid this book as a result, I highly recommend her Play-by-Play series! The first one - The Perfect Play - was really good (I've reread it more than once) and the second - Changing the Game - is phenomenal, in my opinion! But I'm a sucker for a good grovel scene and that book had it in spades! Elizabeth, the heroine in that book, is a strong woman but she is also vulnerable and has redeeming qualities - something that Shannon, in this book, definitely did not.

Fall Fury is the continuation of two other books Jaci Burton has written - A Storm For All Seasons : Summer Heat ( chronicalling the elementally magical Storm family ) and Devlin Dynasty ( werewolves).

This time Max Devlin, werewolf of Boston, is in search of a mate. He knows exactly who he wants: Shannon Storm, fiery daughter of New Orleans's Storm family. And since he's been sent to help them with their P. R. campaign extolling their new casino its time to make his move. They'll be working together every day in the sultry southern heat and fall hasn't gotten chilly yet...

Shannon can't believe her family thinks she needs help with public relations and she doesn't want anything to do with the northerner they've brought in. And if her mother and sister don't shut up about her "destiny" soon she may just have to conjure a storm to do it for them. And why does a wolf suddenly show up in her neighborhood stalking her?!

For those who loved the previose novels the love scenes in this book are few but far more explicit ( if possible) than previousely. Seriousely, even if you've been a romance reader for years, you are still going to blush over this one! The story is also better, I thought, in this book than the others. I only wish Ms. Burton would finallly get around to chilly Logan's story!
inform
Max Devlin is sensitive, intelligent, sexy, loves family and a werewolf. What more can a woman want? Shannon Storm wants NOTHING to do with him. Even though her family has hired him to fine tune the The Rising Storm's public relations campaign. This is her baby and she does not want him interfering in her campaign. Max is attracted to Shannon and tries to get her to recognize the attraction too. She refuses and breaks his heart. He keeps trying to make her understand that she is his mate, but she refuses to listen. When he finally got the courage to tell her he was a werewolf she walked out after telling him he was disgusting. Poor Max. The final parts of the book is of Shannon coming to terms with her love of Max and accepting him as her love.
Sometimes you want to knock some sense into Shannon's head because she is so uncompromising on her outlook and her attitude is deplorable. But all in all it was a good read.

Jaci Burton knows what women like to read. Her books are crisp, exciting and very well written. The Devlin Dynasty series is a personal favorite. Her Alpha males (want one in my Christmas stocking) are real - you can feel, taste and believe in them. The women are strong but all female. Perfect combination... Thank you for the wonderful hours you have given me reading your books. All the books in this series are HOT - HOT - HOT!!! Trust me you won't be dissapointed with this book.
