Great story. I do enjoy this series. Ranger Sam is believable and probably an accurate account of how lawmen operated during that time period. The story moved forward at a brisk pace with enough detail to paint a picture that could be imagined. This author has a talent for telling the story with just enough detail. I have read 15 of the 27 that have been available so far and have enjoyed every one. I believe Ralph Cotton is ranked with Louis L'Amour and William W. Johnstone for being a good story teller. Ralph Compton is right, in my opinion, in his praise of Ralph Cotton.

At last count I found 28 Ralph Cotton westerns on my shelves so you could say I know a bit about his books and that I read most of what he writes. But I am not too crazy about this one, however.

As far as concerned, both Ranger Sam and Ralph have gotten off on the wrong trail. This book is not so much an enjoyable western as it is a stark, noir novel. If you as the reader care for scalping, mutilation, chopping bodies into pieces, nailing padres to a door, eating hearts ripped from dying bodies, shooting dogs, and attesting to being a devil's disciple by both voice and tatoo, then this book may interest you.

Of the first 10 chapters comprising Book 1, this is the regular bill of fare, and, oh yes, the devil's disciple shoots his own partner almost between the eyes when he believes the partner is no longer of any use. Parts 2 and 3 simmer down a bit, but the trademark humor present in so many Ralph Cotton westerns doesn't present itself too often. Worst of all, Ranger Sam Burrack appears not too often either, mostly in Parts 1 and 3, yet sparingly throughout the entire novel.

So, should you enjoy this book, you have yet another to look forward to, as a future book is the closure of this one, entitled SHOWDOWN AT HOLE IN THE WALL due out in March, 2009.

C'mon Ralph, let's get Sam back to more typical westerns, and keep him in the forefront of the story.

This is classic Cotton. He keeps juggling three stories inside one theme. Louis L'Amour quality characters and excellent storyline. Bravo!

I own almost every book Ralph Cotton has written except for a couple that are very hard to get copies of. I have read every Ranger Burrack book except for two which I own but have not read yet. I'm saving them since I expect at the rate Ralph puts out great books that he is going to wear out his keyboard one day and there may be a long delay between books so I'll still have something enjoyable to read.

Just kidding but as for this book, while I have to agree that this story doesn't fit exactly into the typical western mold (Aztec's, rituals, etc.) I applaud Mr. Cotton for creating something with a different twist on the typical western. I really enjoyed this book! It is a bit more violent and graphic but I found that it fit within the context of what the story was about. The Aztec's customs were very bloody. I found the violence to be on par with one of Ralph's earlier books "Hells Riders" which was about a bunch of scalp hunters. The type of people that enjoyed gory behavior. If you think the subject matter of this story is not to your liking then I suggest checking out one of the other Ranger Burrack books. There are plenty of them with typical (but great) western settings. I for one really enjoyed this book and hope Mr. Cotton continues with some non-typical stories every once in a while.

This is the first book I have read by Cotton. The early chapters turned me off with the graphic mutilation of a innocent victims that the bad guys just happen to come upon. I considered quitting but pressed to the end, but it didn't brighten up my days while reading it.
If you are a Ralph Cotton fan you won't be disappointed by this one, or any of his others. I have said before that this writer has a talent for putting the reader right there in the story. There are few authors who can do it, but Mister Cotton knows how. I won't give away the story but Ambush Valley is another tale with Hole In The Wall leader Memphis Warren Beck in it. A great story, with all the trimmings. It even tells how they made dynamite in the old days. Congrats again Mister Cotton. My shelf is full of your books and keeps growing.
