Talk about The Kenneth Roberts Reader

Roberts is an all-but forgotten literary genius. This book, recommended to me by a history professor as his all-time favorite historical novel, is a real page turner. His physical descriptions of the landscape and his evocations of a long-gone era are incredible.

This is a good introduction to Roberts, who remains my favorite novelist of all time. I bought this book to fill in some gaps in my personal Roberts collection. But it doesn't replace the real thing. Roberts' novels have to be read in their entirity; anything else sells the reader short. It is a nice companion to my collection, but should not be considered a stand-alone representation of the man who gave us such gripping novels as "Rabble in Arms" and "Northwest Passage."

This book is a buffet of Kenneth Roberts writings. It speaks of raising ducks, in reclaiming sour land, of power lawn mowers, in painting with oils and water colors, in dogs, in scotch gin, brandy and rum. It talks about rifles, irradicating the brown-tail moth. His writing is so simple, yet so eloquent, A total of 26 topics are touched upon. Just enough of each to wet your curiosity, tickle your funny bone and make you realize that you know so little about so much. You will not put this book down. You will race through 429 pages of observations from a genius writer and wish for more, more, more!. It ends with locating water springs by use of a technique known as water dowsing. Many will laugh at his technique of using a forked twig to locate water. Tell it to the 14 springs he discovered using this method.

Kenneth Roberts is brilliant and at the same time amazingly humorous. He must have slept well at night because tomorrow offered so many new adventures that begged for his investigation and explanation thereof. What a genius- what an absolute delight. All this written in 1945 with a lifetime of experience backing up his conclusions. If I had ever known him, how much richer my life would have been.
