I'm sorry Bobbie Ann Mason, this book is certainly not monkey nuts. The story takes place in the summer of 1984, the year Sam Hughes graduates from high school. Bright, obsessive and restless, Sam is meant for bigger things than the small (fictional) town she has grown up in in the far western edge of Kentucky near Paducah.

Unbound is a book festival in Columbia, Missouri, which celebrates literature of all kinds.

Bobbie Ann Mason has long been considered one of the finest writ- ers of regional fiction-Kentucky is her home and inspiration-but her affecting new novel takes place in France, and she’s just as comfortable and insightful there. A story that’s luxuriously contemplative, sustained by the depth of Mason’s sympathy. The Girl in the Blue Beret has everything: adventure, intrigue, fear, sorrow, nostalgic ache, regret, romance, and most importantly, love.

Talk about In Country

Dori
I really enjoyed this book, In Country gives you the perspective of life from a teenage girls point of view, from the loss of her Father in Vietnam before her birth to the typical trials and tribulations of growing up in a not so perfect home.

Bobbie Ann Mason touches on so many issues here and the ending was perfect in my opinion, I would in fact recommend this novel for any of my friends to enjoy.

This is a fantastic book. It was required reading for a class but I ended up enjoying the book immensely. It would help someone see the effects of PTSD on other members of the family besides the one suffering with it. I like the way the author writes and it was an easy read.

A great book that combines 1960s and 1970s American life with warr-based themes.

Overall an easy read. I am not a huge reader but this book was easy for me to go through quickly

This is a great book for those who love veteran stories. It comes from the perspective of a girl who has lost her father and you instantly fall in love with the characters. Truly a must read.

The novel is a beautifully written piece that shows the VW from a different perspective. It definitely moved me, the ending brought me to tears. Please please please GET THE MOVIE TOO!
Binthars
This book was written in 1984/5 and gives a view of the USA from the eyes of a teenage girl whose father died in the Vietnam War before she was born. It deals with many heavy issues (social and political) without feeling too heavy. This is done by an inordinate amount of pop culture references throughout the novel. It's a very thought-provoking work.
