I state this book was excruciating because the pace necessary to bring the story to conclusion was almost painful and the ending was so open that the story still haunts and reverberates in my mind. The villain was complex and intelligent, his actions so heinous I will have a hard time not comparing all others to him. Val McDermid has made me a true believer and I will happily fall under the spell of Tony Hill and Carol Jordan again and again.

I am reading the series of Tony Hill books and unfortunately I have not done this chronologically. Thus I come across characters in a strange evolution. Unfortunate is the word but the shortcoming is mine not the author's. Any one book is quite understandable for a reader who dips into the series.

Wire .... is well known for the tv series and it may the first encounter with the series of characters for most readers. I read it in one sitting on a lengthy plane flight. I was trapped but Val McD's cast made the trip pleasant, even enjoyable.

Recommended.

Val Mcdermid has a serious talent for writing. She layers multiple mysteries within this novel and impeccably times their solutions into the unraveling of the grand plot... and does it better than just about anyone else today.

Read this series (there are four novels at this time...) and watch the BBC television shows (all of which carry the title of this novel, Wire in the Blood,) you will be amply rewarded.

It usually happens that I read a book, and the series comes along later. This time, I found the BBC series on Netflix, and became instantly addicted. I was reluctant to get the book, worried that it might be a disappointment compared to the series. No worries there. The book is excellent, and provides an even deeper look into the character of the lonely and brilliant criminal profiler, Dr. Tony Hill. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries, suspense, or thrillers - it's all there.

As a fan of true crime novels for many years, I never found mystery fiction to be as good as real life stories. After watching this series on DVD, my wife and I are both Mcdermid fans and i find the books to be even more rewarding than the shows. McDermid must have a lot of real-life experience, because the book reads like a true story. The characters are realistic and their relationships are true to life. Much of the mystery fiction i have read is all about the detective, with all of the action seen through his/her eyes. In McDermid's work, the action is seen through the eyes of the detectives, the victim, the perp and those who are effected by the crime. I used to say about true crime books "you can't make this stuff up." Now I know Val McDermid can.

Five stars for Ms McDermid I love thrillers with some tasty Gore thrown in for good measure.her descriptive writing is so good it's as if you are in the room and able to smell the necrotic flesh as it falls off the poor hostage body. His preoccupation with death and then the hero worship Vance received after his hospice patients had died.I worked as a hospice nurse for over 20 years and therec were people that were just not suitable for this type of work made me think .

I grew up reading pretty violent Christopher Pike books in elementary school and watching R-rated movies all the time... That being said, I think I have had my fair share of violent entertainment, so I don't mind violence. I really don't.

I do think this was an intensely violent book, but there is something uniquely different about all of the psychopaths of the last books I have read and this one... that really made the book unenjoyable. They seem to be successful at DESTROYING even the protagonist's emotional security, so after reading one twisted passage after another and then finding out that the protagonist doesn't recover and evil prevails I was pretty disappointed. I did not even mind all of the parts about graphic molestation and rotting corpses, but if the author is reading this PLEASE remember that there has to be some kind of overbearing theme in the book even if the protagonists do die or fail at their jobs or lose their hope in love or discover they will never feel safe again--which most of happens in this book!

And I also don't mind the overarching theme of homosexuality, no harm there, but I really could not find very many positive things about this book. Even the writing could be more informative or dense, so even though it does have its merits in terms of prose, I would not read it even for that because I don't think it offers much there compared to other psycho-killer or detective novels. The thing that reallly bothered me was even normal situations in the book seemed a bit odd, and a little too succulent (Shaz nodding in approval at her oh-so-tasty apricot pastry at the weirdest point). Like, perhaps, the entire SUCK-ulent book.
I came across Tony Hill and Carol Jordan watching the TV show Wire in the Blood. Since there are no more episodes, I turned to the books. I was not disappointed. This book was excellent and makes me want more.

British crime stories are much more exciting than watching Law and Order. I am a crime junkie, especially when a psychologist is involved. I want to know why, and Tony Hill provides the answers.
