The Pirates! in an Adventure with Communists is the third book in The Pirates! series by Gideon Defoe to feature his hapless pirate crew. This book follows the adventures of the Pirate Captain and his crew through Paris and London-accompanied by Karl Marx and his sidekick Friedrich Engels-as they attempt to clear the communists' good name after it is sullied by Richard Wagner and his malevolent benefactor.

One. Nightmare On Shark Mountain. The pirates were sat in the boat’s kitchen arguing over what the proper protocol was for dealing with a drunken pirate. The best thing to do,’ said the albino pirate, ‘is shave his belly with a rusty razor. ‘That’s rubbish!’ said the pirate with gout. You should soak him in a barrel until he grows flippers. ‘You should put him in bed with the Captain’s daughter!’ ‘You should stick a plaster on his back!’ The pirates were sat in the boat’s kitchen arguing over what the proper protocol was for dealing with a drunken pirate.

I've been thinking of an adventure more along the lines of pearl-smuggling in the South Seas or discovering a lost continent. We're being sponsored, you see, so it's got to be full of glamorous locations and scantily clad women. But nothing is ever straightforward for the hapless pirates

In an Adventure with Scientists nor The Pirates! In an Adventure with Ahab, has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

But rest assured that in both zoetrope display and book, my beard is still luxuriant, Black Bellamy is still a fiend with eyes of the darkest pitch, and there's still a good bit where a chimpanzee gets dressed up in a waistcoat. And, most importantly, at no point does anybody mistakenly think it's somehow inherently funny to 'talk like a pirate'.

Talk about The Pirates! In an Adventure with Communists

First off, I shall not endeavor to give a plot summary because Mr. Defoe's wacky works defy description & his best literary weapon is the surprising concepts he weaves together into a (I'd say a tapestry, but they're too short, so I'll have to say) vest of absurdity.

In some ways, The Pirates! in an adventure with Communists! is actually better than the first novel in this series. The writing has become a bit more polished, the footnotes more witty, and the humor is just as absurdly funny as the first. (I thought the second adventure with Whaling was a bit of a let-down compared to their adventure with Scientists.)

While nothing can top the line about Dino-pirates being their worst fear, this book has great moments involving suspicious Valkyries and pretend sacks of kittens - and even the concept of singing bears is just too hilarious to contemplate. (Personal favorite line in this entry into The Pirates! oeuvre is the one about Nietzche's theory on Spinoza's love life.)

(As a bonus, Defoe caters to the font geeks among us & uses fonts to define personality.)

So, don't wait around, buy this book! It's absurd, it's brashly anachronistic and it's less than the price of a really cheap ham!

I just love the Pirates! books, and I wish there were more of them. They have that British blend of charm, intelligence, word play, and great humor that I am just a sucker for. I have read each of them several times, and will no doubt read each of them several times again. They still make me laugh out loud.

I'm sure Mr. Defoe is getting tired of writing these, but for my part, I would be delighted if he wrote 20 more of them.

The Pirates! Is a great series, and this installment does not disappoint. A great book to read aloud in your best pirate captain voice :D

I highly recommend The Pirates! series to anyone with a sense of humor. All of the novels are excellent and we can't get enough of them. I only wish there were more!

Maybe the best in the series (and educational; best way to attract a girl, beard pomades, political ideology). Funny and wonderful - can't wait for the next 27 volumes.

this book is one in a series of highlarious rides on the bounding mane of comedy writing.
all things piratical, all things comical.
a quick read with lots of guffaws.
I think it's time for this author to move on to a new idea. I love the "Pirates!", but this book seems like it is reminding us that too much riffing on one theme gets old after a while.

This book lacks the character list of "the pirate with the...(fill in your caraciture)", and it lacks a great deal of the humor I loved so much in Defoe's first two books in this series. The action with Karl Marx is good, but it lacks the slapstick feeling that Defoe was able to enliven the first two books with.

I love the writing of Mr. Defoe, but I think he might have run out of things to say with Pirates. If I am wrong, and I hope I am, then I look forward to the next installment, but this was not up to the level of the last two. Sorry.
